Cirencester to Fairford

Post by Airshowguy1 »

Hi, this is a massive long shot but my mum and myself are camping at RIAT for the weekend but arent arriving at Fairford until friday. However the train takes us to Cheltenham and the 51 bus will take us from Cheltenham to Cirencester, the problem starts once we get to Cirencester at about 1:45 as the 77 and 76 buses to Fairford are not until 4.20  So i was just wondering if anyone had any idea how to get from Cirencester to Fairford on the Friday afternoon as cheap as possible as we have already spent £140 on train tickets and a taxi would cost £40 into Fairford and then £40 back again on the Monday.Thanks.

Indeed, i checked a local taxi company in my city and a 9 mile journey is £15 and about £21 on a busy day, so yes £40 is ridiculous however it might be the only choice other than a 9 mile walk or waiting 2 hours for a bus after an already 6 hour journey  :dunno:

Could you go to Swindon on the train and then use the shuttle bus?

With all your camping gear and everything else you'll need for the weekend? Can't you leave home a lot earlier to avoid all of this hassle?

Unfortunately not we are already leaving our house at 5.30am and the train tickets are booked  Looks like its just going to have to be an Uber if we can get one. The walk itself shouldnt be too bad we are packing quite light and ive walked further than that with my camping gear before.

Surely there's a quicker way of getting there, Liverpool to Cirencester is only about 170 miles.

Probably although i cant think of any the train seemed to be the cheapest option (even a coach was more expensive) and we don't have a car so it's a bit of a nightmare really.

I think the problem is that you are travelling to the wrong station... whilst Ciren might be notionally 'closer' to RAF Fairford than Swindon, it's really Swindon which offers the better connections for getting to the Fairford area.

I had a quick look on trainline.com - if you were to leave Liverpool at 0830 you'd arrive into Swindon at 1258 (with a couple of stops at Chester and Newport), from Swindon it should be much easier to get a connecting bus to Fairford.

HTH.

If you've bought your train tickets in advance it is still usually possible to change them, or get refunds. I've done that once or twice via Trainline or National Rail, however you bought them.

But as above, its Swindon station you need to get to, if using public transport.

There's a train that leaves Liverpool South Parkway at 06.40 and gets to Swindon at 10.23 according to Trainline, it has 2 changes at Birmingham and Gloucester.

Sorry everyone forgot about this from yesterday thanks for all the suggestions  . the problem with Swindon was that the shuttle bus only runs until 12 into Fairford and i wouldnt know how else to get from Swindon to Fairford. Anyway we called a Cirencester taxi company and spoke to the manager and he said he can get a taxi to take us as close as possible to fairford for £25 so id say that was pretty good (if close means no more than 3 miles of course  ).
