Finnish Air Force 100th Anniversary, Jyväskyla, Finland 2018

Post by Jakesplanes »

Welcome to my highlights of the arrivals/setting up day at this milestone year in Finland!
This will be photo heavy...
All pics are straight out the camera and unedited
First a rather nice MD500

Super Hornet G Growler on rotate, a rare sight in Europe

Local wildlife...

Midnight Hawks with their signature 'go around' a low pass in formation with smoke. Wish they'd retract the undercarraige but it's nice regardless

NH90 into position. The tail of which then provided the only long enough shadow to hide from the sun and still see the runway.

The COAP Shorts Skyvan. No, i don't know what they were thinking either. And now we can't unsee it...

Saab Safir, delightful little things. Sort of Military plane you could feasibly own and fly the family to france for the weekend in.

Three RAF arrivals, all single seat

Ok that was my thursday, thanks for bearing with me, I hope there was something at least unusual or interesting for you. Comments welcome, and yes, I am aware I was shooting into the sun through haze all day, but we suffer on!
Many Thanks!

Moving on to the Friday, and please do comment folks, discussion more than content is what keeps a forum alive!

We have a lovely two-ship Fouga Magister pair locally, they did a lovely display today, this is the dismount!

Nice shots!! Love that MD500.

Which three RAF Typhoons landed at Tikkakoski?
We saw 916 on static, 317 doing the display on Saturday. The third one was parked next to it.

Best regardsRob

Well I have had a little time to go through the 2500plus photos from saturday and have picked out some to show you guys, so here we go for the first full public show day:
First off to try and offset the sun being in front of the show line i trekked up to the approach end where there was a hill with the sun directly behind. it worked until about 10.30, during which time nothing much came through.
First thing was the Airveteran DC-3
Image23 by golivethedream, on Flickr

DC-3 just about to touch down
Image22 by golivethedream, on Flickr

The next through was the Embraer Phenom 100 of the Finnish Aviation Academy
Image24 by golivethedream, on Flickr

Finally caught a lovely one of the two Magisters coming in together
Image20 by golivethedream, on Flickr

Then wandered down to the opposite end:

The Viima came up for a nice display and finished off with a pass showing the Finnish colours in smoke
Image26 by golivethedream, on Flickr

Now onto the fun stuff, a cracking display by the single seat Draken
Image2 by golivethedream, on Flickr

and the beast taxiing back in
Image3 by golivethedream, on Flickr

great if short display by the Growler
Image10 by golivethedream, on Flickr

Another welcome appearance by the MD500, this time without the doors
Image5 by golivethedream, on Flickr

beautiful colours on the Border Guard Koala
Image4 by golivethedream, on Flickr

Rafale doing what it does best with lots of flair
Image15 by golivethedream, on Flickr

Anything the French can do....
Image18 by golivethedream, on Flickr

Safirs formation takeoff
Image29 by golivethedream, on Flickr

Leading to a four Safir, four Vinka flyby
Image31 by golivethedream, on Flickr

These Magisters though. They really are beautiful!
Image33 by golivethedream, on Flickr

And a last Growler shot to finish the day off
Image13 by golivethedream, on Flickr

Well done on making it through that, just the departure day to go!

Ok thanks for bearing with me, hope its been interesting. Again a reminder all shots are completely unedited and exactly as they came from the camera. Any advice or suggestions welcome!! Finland has a small but varied aviation scene, welcome! It was nice to meet some fellow UKAR members this weekend too!

First to depart was the sleek two seat German Typhoon
Image2 by golivethedream, on Flickr

Cracking full burner departure from the Spanish Eurofighter
Image3 by golivethedream, on Flickr

The two Growlers left together next
Image6 by golivethedream, on Flickr

The Brits left in a dry sedatary fashion, no burners and saving the pennies
Image8 by golivethedream, on Flickr

Swedish contingent showed great support, bravo!
Image9 by golivethedream, on Flickr

Finally a pleasure to see this Eurofighter take off. My first time to see an Italian one.
Image11 by golivethedream, on Flickr

Then the heavens opened so made my way home.
All in all a nice weekend, difficult photography conditions and a slow pace, certainly could have been a fuller lineup but very enjoyable nonetheless. I hope you've enjoyed Looking through these and it encourages you to make the trip over soon!

some lovely shots in there, looks like you had a blast.

i'm not gonna lie, there is a lot of dust spotting which distracts the keen eye so might be worth clone stamping the little buggers out. the curse of the SLR photographer they are

Thanks man yeah the whole weekend was an experience, outside of the airshow too. Great times. Yeah I have seen the dust spots too but have no idea how to get shot of them, what software do you use? I know next to nothing about editing yet!

I use lightroom. there is a handy tool which allows you to select blemishes like that and it removes them.

it's something that happens with SLR's. normally means there is dust on the sensor

Which normally means it's time for a Sensor clean! Please refer to the 'Photography Hints, Tips & Questions' section where the options have been done to death.
If you're using Canon equipment, the 'Digital Professional Pro' product on the enclosed disc has an 'idiot-proof' (I can use it?) "stamping tool" that will kill dust-bunnies stone-dead on shots you have taken! Although it's best Not to breed them in the first place
Unfortunately I couldn't find an equipment list on your website & didn't look for clues in Exif data. :dunno:

Great stuff, my favourites are the Magisters, and that gorgeous Dak. Is that first Rafale wearing the Finish Cat Squadron marking on the tail? If so they didn't waste time zapping it!
