More Golden Oldies Take 2

Post by dreamworker »

Axell Ostermann in 'The Vikings " F104G decided to do a touch and go onto the short runway at Leicester Airport during the Leicester Aero Clubs 1986 Air Day.

They then flew their usual thrilling routine including this tight turn taking him right over the crowd. Notice the wingtip vortices showing how tight the turn was.

Surely one of THE most memorable sights at any airshow in the last 40 years.....my heart was pounding and the sound of shutters clicking said it all....thrilling. Up to then , the TU95 had been a grainy photo in my Observer Book of Aircraft.

Another show stopper, and I can still remember the ground shaking as she took off. Mildenhall 1986

I tried to catch the end of the Boeing 707, which invariably meant long waits for really exotic examples, such as this Uganda Airways 707 landing at gatwick in 1985.

The holy grail of display teams for me, having missed them at Farnborough 72 , were the G91s of Frecce Tricolori. Luckily they made an appearance at Greenham Common in 1981.

Forgive the poor technical quality of this shot which was taken on the appalling Orwo slide film and over exposed, but the subject matter and the fact that photos of Patrouille de France seem to be so rare makes it noteworthy.

These are great - that first one especially, considering how fast they landed.

Awesome - a really smashing collection. Just one correction if I may - the Virgin 747 and Bucc at are Biggin Hill Int. Air Fair 1993, not '88.

Thanks for all the nice comments.......digital has of course revolutionised aviation photography and we see stunning results nowadays. i just remember being at the end of the runway at St Mawgan with my Pentax MX trying to focus manually on a rapidly approaching F104 with a 300mm lens that only opened up to F5.6 !.....and then the nerve racking wait for the Kodachrome slides , knowing that anything could happen. I travelled to Russia in 1988, and made the fatal mistake of packing off all my Kodachrome in the same batch to Hemel hempstead, only to be told that there had been a fault in the processing line.....they gave me 2 rolls of KR64 to replace each lost one !!!!!...hardly compensation was it. ow how i'd love to be at the end of a runway now with that Norwegian F104 approaching , but this time i'd have my Nikon D810.
