Looking for a recommendation to replace RIAT on my Calendar
Looking for a recommendation to replace RIAT on my Calendar
I've gone to RIAT the last 3 years, and loved it each year, but I want to do some more exploring.
Looking for a recommendation for another show to go to, either European or otherwise, that usually boasts a good lineup, ideally faces north (or northish), allows the use of flares, and is from a country where I won't constantly be concerned with my camera getting stolen.
Any recommendations?

MAKS MAKS and err MAKS
your camera can be stolen in any country... better stay indoors.

I thought about MAKS, and like the idea of Russia, but doesn't it face south?
And yes, cameras can be stolen anywhere. I get that. More just looking for somewhere RELATIVELY friendly.

You can head to the river area to get better photos, that's what most visitors do.
MAKS.
Besides, it's RUSSIAN STUFF!

Zeltweg appears to meet your criteria
Also, if you are a FRIAT type, Zeltweg has a special package for access at different vantage points for arrivals and showdays. Includes food and drinks too I believe (never used it, but have heard great things about it)

From what is rumoured or announced to be around next year, I would say Zeltweg or Volkel. Maybe combine them? There were times in the past when they were on consecutive weekends.
A weather forecast is a forecast and just that

Zeltweg definitely in September next year so not consecutive weekends (sadly for me)

I’d recommend Bucharest....just got back from this years show today, and even without the MiG21s it was a fantastic day out. Show faces north and you get to see everything twice as the show is repeated in the evening

Long shot, but have the Iranian F-14’s been known to leave Iran ever?

I think you'll have to go to Iran if you want to have a shot at seeing one... no idea how they feel about foreign avgeeks though

As this is an airshow forum and you have already said these are rumours - please lets here what those rumours are.

Yeovilton? It’s my favourite anyway.

Yeovilton is a great show, I've been the last two years, but really doesn't serve to replace Air Tattoo honestly. This year was an amazing lineup, and it still was nowhere near the scale, and an 8 hour flight for a 1.5 day show isn't really what I'm looking for.

Japan to see the Phantoms one last time.

If you are coming for a few weeks try and string a few together.
SIAF, Zeltweg, Sanicole, Ostarva would not be too shabby!

Except only Zeltweg is northfacing in that list (Much as it pains me to say this as Sanicole volunteer) I know, people will point to the naughty field in Ostrava, but that was not the original question, not to mention the safety implications.
And you know, Zeltweg is just... Zeltweg, an absolute show even if nothing on the list beforehand looks mind-blowing on paper.

Reviving an ageing title here. You would need to do several other events in quick succession to get the same intake of aviation. If indeed, any such single event of equivalent cost & content to RIAT was available, I would already have reserved flights, Hotel, car & access! In the absence of any such show being promoted you now have two choices....[1] go to RIAT2019 & enjoy the best/longest/ most varied air-show in the World, or [2] Don't!
Re: Looking for a recommendation to replace RIAT on my Calen
It's looking more and more like I will be doing the RIAT -> MAKS journey. Anyone that has done MAKS recently that can talk about the tours to across the river? Accommodations? Driving? etc?

[3] Go to something that isn't an airshow ( variety is the spice of life, as the saying goes ) -- Bovington's 'Tankfest' ( 28-30 June ) or the Tall Ships Race ( Aalborg --> Fredrikstad --> Bergen --> Aarhus, 03 July-03 August )

My sister in law's family actually lives on the water in Fredrikstad...I can go see the Tall Ships pretty easily...buuuuuuut I'm not quite ready to stop seeing air shows in favour of boat races yet...still a couple more whiskers to grow before that happens.
