Saab took over the aircraft in 2016, with the SwHF operating them and agreed to keep them airworthy until at least the Swedish Air Force's 100th in 2026 and Saab's 90th in 2027. It does not mean they will stop flying in 2027, Saab may choose to continue - rather too early to say

Interesting, thanks for that. Would be a massive loss to the display scene more generally!

If they can do it at Farnborough, they can do it at RIAT.

Agreed! It's been way too long since we saw a Hercules in the flying display.

The last one I remember is probably the old Swedish demo... that was a good'n!

Can't recall seeing one being looped in a UK display.

Only trouble is, its not a loop (or a barrel roll) its a steep wingover like the A400M does filmed from almost underneath it.

I don't think that's a wing over. I would call it an oblique loop or a very wide barrel role.

Nevertheless, it is a wingover. The aircraft is never anything like fully inverted. The entry is very steep, the exit is very steep, but it flies round a bit of a bend at perhaps the same angle as the A400M does (remembering that the A400M is a bigger aircraft) and dives out on about the reciprocal of the entry direction: not a loop, oblique or otherwise. It doesn't pull right through (again, never fully inverted let alone inverted on the way right round) so not a barrel roll either.

Getting a feeling of deja vu here......maybe someone should ask Kev Rumens

And be it a roll, loop, wing-over, or anything else you want to argue it was.....it needs to be at RIAT.

Most of that list is realistic apart from...

Mi-28 - Not going to happen. Russia are not invited at the moment due to the diplomatic relationship.
F-2 flying - Static maybe, but flying - never, not with the distances involved - it isn't a large aircraft designed for long distance deployments ala the P-1
F-4 flying - Again, static maybe, but flying - never

My first wish is that we don't have a return or continuation of those utterly pointless "What do we think will be announced today" pots. I mean, what's the point? Let's all guess blindly about something which no one other than those involved directly has the faintest clue about... :wall:
Don't be surprised to see posts of that nature 'disappearing' :ninja:

Back to an aviation nature, as a theme covers a NATO anniversary, how about getting participation from every member state - I'm particularly look at returns from Romania, Bulgaria, Latvia, Croatia even Portugal (Merlin, please!) - could Albania manage to send something?

I would list a load of airframes but it would go on forever and I could keep adding every time I looked at it...
However, Su-25 Frogfoot will forever be one of the top items in any list I make, as well as more foreign Army assets (Foreign Chinooks, Pumas, A-129 Mangusta...) and lesser-seen foreign Navies

You sure, bro?

Algeria operates Mi-28s, and have been to previous RIATs so it’s not entirely dependent on Russia.

F-2, I think the unfaesability of it actually getting here is the unlikely bit. If it can make it for static, then provided a demo pilot is available and present and their display validated, why wouldn’t it fly if it has made it?

F-4, again, why not if the Greeks or Turks decide to mount a display? We know they can make it here in this day and age? Unlikely, yeah, but “never”? Bit strong.

And why does a wish list have to be realistic? My wish is for this sub-forum to calm down and return to some form of normality next year. Don’t think you could get more unrealistic!

Didn’t even know Algeria had Mi-28s

I don’t think we would see an F-4 demo from those nations though, they don’t display the aircraft and I can’t see them working up a display pilot especially for RIAT.

Mr Tommy and I had a long chat about this during this year's RIAT. Without going completely insane and shouting about ROKAF Phantoms or Kazakh MiG-31s, we came up with a 'realistic' [cough] wishlist based purely on rarer NATO assets, all based here in Europe. I'd be delighted to see any of the following on static... also I think most if not all of these have attended RIAT in the past:

French AF C-135, E-3 (when was the last time we had a French E-3 in the UK!?)
Turkish C-135 - been great to see it during arrivals over the last few years, would make a fine static addition
Turkish Phantoms - been far too long
Greek Phantoms
French Navy E-2C
NATO E-3 (if it doesn't come next year, given the theme, then it never will)
Portuguese F-16s - used to see these quite frequently, again it's been years
Spanish AF F-5s
Spanish Navy AV-8s
Italian Navy AV-8s
Italian Army A129 Mangusta
Swiss F-5s (plain, operational, non-Patrouille ones)
Danish Merlins
Swedish AF Saab 340AEW&C
Swedish Black Hawk
Austrian Black Hawk
Norwegian P-3
German Navy P-3

Sounds easy in theory, eh?
Posting comments on an aviation-related chatroom, are ya? Looks like it an' all...

I'm all for the fast jets and transports, but I do miss seeing the 'exotic' choppers at Fairford.

So, I'd love to see a return of a Hind or several, either static or flying or both.

Would be great if the USMC can bring over a number of helicopters, maybe a UH-1Y, AH-1Z, and maybe a CH53K. Maybe there will be a cruise nearby at the time (very much wishful thinking).

It's time we saw a Tigre or two as well.

On top of this maybe a Seasprite or the MH60R Seahawk from Denmark.

Missed seeing a Blackhawk in the skies this year, ok the Pave Hawk was on static, would have loved to have seen that flown in on arrivals.

So, more helicopters for me, but I know this won't be the most popular of requests

Also have the helicopters depart along the flightliine on departures day, or at least bring them down as far as the FRIAT grandstand......................

Time I went to Yuma for a week or so

Another one for my wishlist.

U.S Navy F-16A. Probably one of the most unrealistic ones (aside from Iranian Tomcats and Russian Tu-160s) but it is a beauty.
