Marketing role at Brooklands

Post by pbeardmore »

May be of interest to some but I did have to do a double take at the salary:

https://www.brooklandsmuseum.com/about/work-for-us

Marketing Director

Brooklands Museum is seeking to appoint a Marketing Director. This new position will be a key part of the senior leadership team. The Marketing Director will work with the existing marketing department to grow the museum’s visitors through a programme of research, brand development and by devising a new pricing and marketing strategy, which will reach out beyond the existing core audiences of enthusiasts and families.

Brooklands Museum, in Weybridge, Surrey, is on the 30-acre site of the world’s first purpose-built motor racing circuit and the most productive aircraft factories in Europe in the twentieth century. The stories of motor sport and aviation at this site are bound together from the beginning and share key themes of inventiveness, adventure, ambition and engineering innovation. In 2018 it was a finalist in the prestigious Art Fund Museum of the Year award.

It is an exciting time to join the museum. Over the next 12 months we will be reviewing our strategic priorities, master-plan and operations, with a view to significantly increasing visitor numbers and completing substantial new capital projects in the coming years. The Marketing Director will play a key role in shaping the museum’s plans.

The person we are looking for will have considerable experience developing and implementing brand and marketing strategies that grow visitor/customer numbers and build reputation. They will have a successful track record of business to customer marketing, ideally within the visitor attraction, museum, heritage, cultural or leisure sectors. They will have well developed leadership skills and be able to effectively cultivate a widespread focus on visitors/customers and brand within an organisation. They will be able to contribute to the overall development and leadership of the museum and take a holistic view of the role of marketing and communications in delivering the museum’s charitable purposes and business objectives. They will enjoy working collaboratively with other departments and the museum’s partners on site and beyond.

Part-time: 2.5 to 3.5 days per week. Salary c. £45,000 pro rata.

£31,500 a year for a marketing director, near London? Absolute peanuts.

Yes, unfortunately IMHO it does tend to indicate that, like many charities, they are not taking marketing seriously. How can you do a thorough job on a 2 1/2 day week ? What is the profile of the kind of person they are trying to attract? I can only think of someone who has retired (already paid for the house and on a pension) and wants to "dable" with something. Real shame.

Or maybe, like many charities, they can't afford to offer more?

Try buying, or even renting a half-way decent home near to Brooklands on £31,500 a year and see how big a shoebox you get...

Might suit someone who already has a house, and isn't ready to retire yet. I'm sure it's a fairly interesting role - as far as marketing goes.

Job will most likely go to some retired 'city suit' or MP. Who will use it as a charitable tax break, get free admission to the collection for his family and friends, invites and free tickets to all the big motor sport events and air shows. It will be a good talking point down the golf club. Chances of the applicant actually doing any work will be nil, apart from appointing a city based event management team to 'reinvent the collection'.

In the grand scheme of things £30k is peanuts, but maybe a young apprentice 'hangar rat' who can be trained to maintain and repair the cars and aircraft would be better way to spend the money ?

It's short term thinking, find some more cash (even borrow it), get a full time expert for £60,000ish in it will reap genuine benefits. Hire the right person and they will pay for themselves many times over.
