Looks like the Tornado might get the send-off it deserves after all.
Let’s just hope the RAF show it off a bit more than they did the NTM Puma.

Potentially more than one to receive a special scheme.
But it’s now off season, Tornados will be gone before the airshows start again, so opportunities to see these in the public domain are limited to none and I fear the only real chance will be a Marham ‘farewell (night)shoot’ at £100 per head...

Or maybe a tour of the country, similar to what the Sea Kings did? (A bit of a long shot, but would be nice).

£100, oh good a nice cheap one for a change...
As you say just like all that have gone before (Jaguar, Harrier, Tornado F3, Jetstream, Dominie, Nimrod, VC10, Tristar etc) it will probably be a half-arsed non public event for dignitaries and selected invitees and the specials will be coaxed into the air for a single photo session with "published aviation photographers"....

Re: Special Scheme Tonka
Actually no published photographers got the chance the last time when they had the 5 special Tonkas.
The occasion when the 40th Anniversary, 9,12,15 and 31 Sqn 100years jets all got together in formation was for the RAF/MoD, and that was on the day two of them went to RTP. But just taking photos isn't part of the game now is it... ?
You need to be capable of writing something as well. Otherwise move along now...nothing to see here
I think you might find the Jag got the best send off, assuming you saw them flying over Coningsby as the no 6 (twice). Alas the big finale for Harrier was stuffed by the weather (Mental note..... December - never the best time of the year for a retirement)

Very nice - one of the RAF's best for some time.
What's with the 'AF' code - I thought they were all three digits now?

Re: Special Scheme Tonka
It looks familiar. Isn't it very similar to the 9Sqn centenary from a few years ago?

Very similar to the 2014 scheme, but I was a big fan of that, so fair play IX(B) Sqn and the RAF

9 squadron Tornados were coded Ax before they lost codes (and then subsequently gained numerical codes after(?) the GR.4 upgrade process)

Re: Special Scheme Tonka
When 9 Sqn reformed at Honington in 1982, they had single letter codes, only taking up the A* prefix upon moving to Bruggen.
The entire fleet went numerical in 2006.

Stunning that, nicely done!
Re: Special Scheme Tonka
A proper old-school scheme, for a proper old-school jet; perfect!!

ZG775/AF.
Re: Special Scheme Tonka
Thanks Abbo. I did manage to get a partial of the 75 from a pic and worked it out. I was interested to see if it was a flyer, and not a "withdrawn from use" airframe.

Re: Special Scheme Tonka
Its nice, but not jawdropping as it should be, as mentioned looks like a slightly less flamboyant version of the centenary scheme.
Give it some retro camo along the undersides to show some old school. Again as previously mentioned, if they'd have got this ready along with a 31sqn machine and sent to RIAT so the public could see them at a show for the final time, it would have been more worthwhile, but it will join the likes of the Jaguar and Harrier retirement schemes in not getting a public outing before retirement.

Seen it mentioned in a few places that there may still be two more to come yet, so I'd guess at/hope for a 31 Sqn tail and an all-over retro camo scheme like the Harrier.

What makes you so sure? The RAF have said to keep an eye on their social media for updates on their plans for the Tornado farewell, so we’ll see what happens.
Also, didn’t think it warranted its own thread but Typhoon ZK434 has recieved special markings to mark 500,000 flying hours across the fleet.

Still better than the RAF100 stickers.

You want me to explain the difference between putting on a small event for a limited number of spotters/photographers/loadsamonies and a public airshow where thousands of people attend?
Jeez, that Typhoon looks cheap.

It’s (probably) not the RAF’s fault this time though. I didn’t realise but the Italian, German and Spanish air forces painted a Typhoon each the same way too.

Re: Special Scheme Tonka
Perhaps you can all write to Eurofighter who pointed out they have flown XXXXX number of hours, and complain that they didn't paint them all up in a special scheme
Not like Typhoon has anything better to do
