Welcome to the Jungle - LIMA19

Post by JonoUK »

Hi All,

The flanker once again luring me to far away places, this time Malaysia focusing on the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition - LIMA for short. My main hope was to see exotic jets against an exotic backdrop, probably quality over quantity. What unfolded that week surpassed all expectations.

The Royal Malaysian Airforce pulling no punches, whether it was because it was the 25th addition, lack of another visiting display team or just peak serviceable jets I'm not sure but it was great to see so much of their air force in one trip and the weather was perfect. The opening gambit is a truly explosive 10 minutes of action like I've never seen before and this time the fighters operated from Langkawi itself!

On with the show...

Amazing photos of amazing subjects - wonderful stuff.

I think the first one is my favourite, but what the hell is going on in number 3? :dizzy: :hide: :joystick:

Number 3 is like an insane hallucination during a particularly vivid cheese-induced dream.

Absolutely brilliant thread.

Fantasctic set, some truly amazing shots there!

What kind of focal length do you need for the close ups, like the Flanker in number nine?

Wow, I doubt they'll be a better show in 2019 than that! Some awesome images.

Superb set Jonathan... take a bow.
Am looking at a trip there for the show in 2021 with a FRIAT friend of mine from Tasmania. Would be awesome to see anything like half of that!! :hypno:

From the hill, would a Canon 100-400mk2 be reasonable?

Thanks...

To answer a couple of questions

For that particular shot, not much as the flanker camera from behind and pulled up hard in front of me, 400mm on a crop body would net you the shot.

For the most part yes if coupled with a crop sensor body but as the flying was often in lower light conditions you would want to avoid the use of a teleconverter. 400mm on full frame would bit a little too distant. One thing though, make sure you get in location at least half an hour before shooting and acclimatise your equipment, many were suffering with fogged up glass due to the insane amount of humidity - Langkawi feels constantly wet.

Cheers again gents
