Re: Sir Frank Whittle: the test pilot who revolutionised aviation

Two things about the OP, the first is that the shapes of both the M1 and the X-1 were based on the shape of the bullet/shell on the grounds that these were the only things that had ever passed the 'sound barrier' or M1, so adopting it reduced the engineering risk. I don't know whether NACA/Bell's en...

Re: Airshow melancholy.

My first one was Burtonwood in 1954. In those days shows were few and far between and difficult to get to because of the isolation of most airfields. Generally it was railway to the nearest station and then bicycle. From memory the attendees included WB-50, B-66, F-84, F-86, Globemaster, Packet, C-4...

Now allowing pedestrians for the drive-in shows. However, there is a new pricing structure which is essentially another increase if you’re coming by car with more than 1 person. It’s now £10 for a 5x5m space and each person must have an airshow ticket - £26 (£34 after discounted price ends in Febru...

Re: Flying Legends 2021 - 10th & 11th July at Sywell (Merged)

I have, in recent years, given up on Flying Legends prefering to go, instead, to the Friday practice day. It will be interesting to see what arrangements, if any, are made for a practice day at Sywell. Normally that airfield is pretty unhelpful for enthusiasts.

That would be my interpretation too. I suspect that she is employed to manage the day-to-day business of the American Museum rather than to have any real historical knowledge of aviation. Judging by the perennial pristine condition of the museum she does that well enough, but it would be better if s...

Re: Flying Legends to cease at Duxford

For many years now I've thought that 'Flying Legends' has become stale with too few standout items and too many of the same, eg Spitfires, Mustangs etc. Consequently I stopped going regularly decades ago and my last visit was 2012. Having said that I have, recently, made a practice of visiting on th...

There was no mention of facemasks when in the shop or hangars. That's because the site is closed apart from access to toilet facilities and a snack/drink vendor within your designated parking zone. The rest of the time you're expected to stay by your car in your allocated parking space. The email s...

Re: Olympus Camera's R.I.P. ?

I once had on OM-10 and the shutter was most unreliable. It was replaced with others under warranty and they were equally unreliable, the lenses however were really good for the period. I then acquired a second hand OM-1N which served me for many years before the shutter started sticking in 2001. I ...

I had an email from the Shuttleworth yesterday which said that picnicking near to the car was acceptable. If this is so ten photography outside, but very close to, the car will be acceptable to. But then you would need to arrive very early to avoid being in the overspill car park! There was no menti...

See IWM are making space for the next "Quilt Fest"... m I think it should have gone to Cosford to join the other prototypes. I was thinking the same, though EAP takes pride of place there, so I don’t know whether they would have wanted it. It’s great to see it go to a smaller museum, Tbf....

Re: German Typhoons beat USAF F-35s in WVR combat

In a gun fight I would have been surprised if Typhoons hadn't beaten F-35s to be honest ... If you’re in a WVR dogfight with a specialist dogfighting aircraft using cannons in your stealthy BVR interceptor, then something has seriously gone wrong with your mission. ... OK, but shouldn't the F-35 pi...

I use a Panasonic FZ200 bridge camera. This has a better lens and a larger sensor that any video camera that I can afford and therefore it gives a better result. If you decide to go down this route you will also need a Neutral Density 2 filter to reduce the ASA rating from 100 ASA to 50 if you want ...
