Re: Oh those Russians

I thought it went on all the time and only gets reported on when it is a slow news day or they want to bounce something else off the front page.

Is anything else happening in the world they might want to divert attention from?

Cynical? Moi?

Al Walker

I am surprised not to have seen this mentioned in here but we lost Alan Walker, ex-OFMC, Memphis Belle, Firebird Aeros Pilot, ‘Just Jane’ taxi pilot and good friend on the afternoon in 4 Jan. For the last couple of months he joined me in suffering from cancer and we were able to give mutual support,...

Re: Old Meridien/Southern TV docu on the ATA

Sadly no, I had found them on YouTube too. The one you’ve linked to, all three links, is the same one produced sometime in the early 2000s. The one I am looking for was also, possibly, called forgotten pilots and even an IMDB search doesn’t come up with it. It had a lot more interviews with women AT...

Old Meridien/Southern TV docu on the ATA

I have been fruitlessly searching for an old docu from about 1983-85 (ish) produced by local ITV on the ATA. I seem to remember it was called The Forgotten Pilots but there was another one produced under the same name much later (poss 2011) and IMBD lists another from 1999, and I am sure this was mu...

Re: The D Day story

Allthough it is not relevant to 1944, the combined ticket to the Historic Dockyard and the various attactions (althouth the excellent Mary Rose is extra) is very good value and lasts you a year. You are right, selling the embroidery on it's own may have been difficult. The answer was not to be found...

If there was just the embroidery, it would be a better museum, the naffness of the rest overshadows the excellent stitching!

Re: The D Day story

I cannot disagree more. You are right about the embroidery, which is stunning, but the museum is a travesty and, in my opinion, one of the worst museums I have been to. It falls into the trap of being scared to tell the full story due to, I assume, political correctness. I would not waste my time go...

Disgruntled, many thanks for that. - and for everyone else, sorry for the thread drift. My dad volunteered a few days before his legal birthday in 1942. His dad had employed him on building repairs which was a reserved occupation but the old man was not happy so he joined up. He said for years that ...

Re: Portsmouth D Day Flypast

Thanks, he'd have appreciated that. I was really agreeing with the previous post, this is not about it being an airshow, but the sad fact it is not even really about us in any way either, it is a political back slapping exercise. I find it very sad that some of those few that are left will be denied...

Re: Portsmouth D Day Flypast

The level of security in place as a result of the US Presidential visit will also make it close to impossible to see anything worthwhile. It is not even worth visiting the D-Day museum in Portsmouth which is quite appalling since it's (expensive) makeover and it leaves out large portions of the stor...

Not at all accurate.

Really? Not according to some people deep within the industry. Perhaps OK if you are going to have the WW1 reenactment but anything bigger is overflying.

Re: Low Level Take Off

Viv Bellamy once told me he had seen some American pilots come to pick up some Spitfires from Worthy Down. As they took off, they did this whole thing of keeping low and pulling the gear up. There was a general murmer of appreciation but then he saw Jeffrey Quill taxi out and take off, the tail came...

[quote="XL189"]Perhaps a better comparison photograph would be a Vixen break at somewhere other than Dunsfold where the Sparrows can only perform their "flat" dispaly.

Not quite flat, but rolling.

But it is a good point.

Stu Goldspink's son

Please excuse this but, for many reasons, I think it is important. Many of you will have seen or even know Stu Goldspink who is not only one of the better warbird pilots were have in the UK, but is also a genuinely decent bloke and a good friend. What is less well know is that Stu's son Jordan had b...

Re: Practice Displays on airshow days.

As Dom alludes, if you have a CAA DA or a military approval you can practice in public. If you don't have one, or you are validating for one show, that is not public. I practiced mine over areas of open land with a road as a datum and never below 500ft agl. Final practice was done at Rendcomb with M...

Will you please inform Southport then that the tide makes no difference to when they can hold there airshow. Tide is very much a factor in when they can hold there show.

That is more to do about access to the beach not being restricted, nothing to do with tide lines.

Re: Display line distance

As far as I know the tide also needs to be taken into account when they are calculating the distance for the display line, which usually results on the display line being calculated based on a low tide. No, if the crowd line is defined, and there is an exclusion on the beach, the line will not need...
