Re: Robert Taylor RIP
Sad news. For my money the only aviation artist who got each aircraft spot on in terms of realistic portrayal. Also his work had bags of atmosphere, the machines were alive, seemed to breathe, and in the battle scenes you could almost hear the crackle of machine guns and the thud of bombs. I have th...

Re: Your Favourite UK Airshow Venue
For me Little Gransden may be my fave. The atmosphere is warm and relaxed, the planes start up and taxi very close, the trip there through country lanes is a delight. It's the epitome of an English show on a summer day.

If you become a member mostly for the free admission on standard days,
you're far better off joining the Catalina Society for £20 per year as you can get
in free with that all year round except show days

Re: Duxford Dates 2024
If they want to charge 50 notes they had better get more imagination when it comes to bookings. Sending up the usual suspects won't cut it for me. I'm getting bored with DX thinking the usual Harvard, Cubs, MK1 Spit, Team Raven, Flying Comrades etc etc (just examples!) will do. For near RIAT price I...

Re: Duxford Battle of Britain Airshow 2023 - 16th & 17th September
The 30 min gap was caused by cancellation of the WW1 birds and the Glads on the Sunday.
The Grace tribute was lovely I thought. And I didn't expect to say this but the Reds were really close at the Tank bank end and were rather good because of it! Not sure they fly closer at any other UK venue.

Re: Duxford Battle of Britain Airshow 2023 - 16th & 17th September
A tailchase, superb. Some years they had large Spit formations but not chases and those years felt a bit disappointing to me. Tailchases are the most impactful and immersive way to show off warbirds imho.

Doubt it will go down well with Sunday attendees if the Lanc and Sally B don't pair up that day, it's been a much advertised part of the show.

Re: Old Buckenham 2023
Always a decent show at OB and it has really grown in recent years. Price rise meant I gave it a miss this year, the only negative is that Ken 'Exceptional' Ellis is a bit annoying on commentary. And his jokes are recycled year on year!

Re: RIAT 2023 Discuss everything thread
Have never been to a major European airshow, but I must admit one or two do look epic. Especially venues in the mountains. RIAT can't beat that but it scores in other areas. In the end it's about what you look for in a show... Photogenic opportunities, serials, foreign exotics, just the flying etc e...

Re: RIAT 2023 Discuss everything thread
In the museum in Gatow there is a Spanish Casa which was once borrowed for an exhibition in the Netherlands. As it was being taken by barge through Germany, the swastika on the tail had to be covered. The Buchons I've seen in the UK still have one FWIW I absolutely hate the faux dogfights some disp...

Re: RIAT 2023 Discuss everything thread
Genuine question, would people still be saying that if the display wasn’t accompanied by Enya? (Emotions can play a big part in decision making). For the record I thought it was a stunning routine. I think yes I would still love it but for me the whole package sealed the deal... Smokewinders, super...

Those that either half know or don't know always seem to talk the loudest on the crowd line. Often people that do know just stay quiet I find.

Re: RIAT 2023 Discuss everything thread
I agree about the Reds. They have become stale... Not enough invention in the manoeuvres last few years. The public usually say 'best in the world by far' but often people saying that either haven't seen a display in last few years or if they have, don't actually watch it objectively. As for comment...

Re: RIAT 2023 Discuss everything thread
Think the Czech Gripen was warned 'too low' for that cool take off! Party poopers eh. Felt for RJF, no show all weekend. A long journey and no display. On Sunday the weather was improving and they asked to display but were told no by tower as weather was below minima. Shame. Similar thing with BAC F...

Re: Security
But no-one knew what it all meant, hence it was ignored on Sun by most in Red at least. I had a backpack and folding chair, did that make me hand or hold luggage? I had no clue either. I think they will keep the checks of course, but may bin the named lanes. Just my opinion of course.
