Re: Long Marston Shackleton on the move
It will be very interesting to hear how the proposed move goes as at St. Mawgan there is much talk of moving the gate guardian Shackleton from its location on the base to Classic Air Force. She looks very neat and tidy overall thanks to the ongoing efforts of the Cornish Aviation Society but the yea...

Re: What should I look for when buying a scanner?
I have a couple of Yupiteu 7100s and also a Signal R535. I have read the advice given here with interest as I realise my scanners are getting a bit long in the tooth. I quite fancy getting a Uniden but know a few owners who quite simply cannot sort out how to use them and input the required frequenc...

Re: Airbase (Mk II) - St Mawgan
I think the Eden Project gets around a million visitors a year and if memory serves me correctly, Clasic Air Force are looking for around 100,000. Eden has this week announced redundancies totalling around 70 from their workforce of over 400, seems the Olympics last year resulted in a significant re...

Agree the grassy area referred to above is probably best bet for viewing what little activity there is to see these days. Parking at the terminal isn't cheap and the fence is ridiculously high.

Re: Worst conditions at Airshows ?
Interesting comments here regarding St. Mawgan and poor weather but at least down here it often goes through quickly to brighten up later in the day. Culdrose comments well founded - it was Culdrose which also gave me the greatest problem in traffic terms, five hours to travel the last two miles and...

I sometimes wonder why we don't see more of Sally B, presumably getting along to a venue is not going to be a cheap option with today's fuel costs

Re: 2011 RIAT Attendance Figures
I was surprised that current attendance figures for RIAT are so low until I paused to think of the fallling numbers of aircraft attending, the rising costs of a ticket and so on and this set me wondering how many used to attend in "the good old days" say a decade ago and in its heyday in t...

Heard the Gazelle call up on the radio saying four POB routing Culdrose - Boscombe Down and saw it at 1600 routing Plymouth direction, very nice in the RAE red white and blue paint job.

I would reduce numbers of Squadron Leaders by 50% and all ranks above that by at least 60%, the Service is I think top heavy with brasshats. Not so long ago the RAF had 1300 Wing Commanders and 400 or so Group Captains.

A friend of mine has a 3500 - and can't sort out how to input the frequencies. I scratched my head some years ago to sort out my Yupiteru 7100 but got it in to my thick skull - eventually ! I have come across a few folk at air shows who can't imput frequencies in to their 7100 and have put a few rel...

Re: Has RIAT lost its Rapport?
What could befall RIAT ? Sadly far too many well established air shows such as Middle Wallop, St. Athan, St. Mawgan, Mildenhall and many many others have fallen by the wayside over the years. Relatively little seems to be passed to the charities following the Air Tattoo. I personally never thought M...

Re: 1 in 4 RAF Student pilots to be axed
Forgive me if I am straying off the topic but it seems to me highly probable that once the Americans pull out of Afghanistan given the parlous state of their finances, the USAF will also face significant cuts. Cuts in the military here and in the RN and RAF in particular seem to be far too severe in...

Re: Culdrose Air Day 2011 ?
Latest I've heard is that runway work will commence March 1st and be complete by June 1st. If this proves to be accurate, it should be OK for the air show in July but remember Yeovilton was cancelled one year when building work was underway. Let's hope for the best

C-17 did several approaches, callsign Ascot 812.
C-17s tend to use the airport say once a month or perhaps somewhat less for training and put in a couple of hours or more locally. Nice to see them in this very quiet neck of the woods.

I've also heard Culdrose will have runway work undertaken this year. There's suggestions that the Jetstreams and Hawks wanted to operate out of Newquay whilst work was underway down at CU but were turned down by the airport operators. Never underestimate the ability of a Council to mess things up ! ...

German Air Force was at St. Mawgan last week, may perhaps return at the conclusion of the exercise in the next day or so ? Not much military activity sadly these days apart from the Algerian Lynx and Merlins.
Was a little further south today and saw Belgian Air Force 621 - ERJ135 - at Culdrose.
