Re: Nikon AF-S 70-200mm f/4 G ED VR TeleConverter

The Nikon AF-S 70-200 f4 plus Nikon TC-14E AF-S Teleconverter III is a good pairing. I use it all the time. Focusing is good and the image is still excellent with just a minute amount of degradation in IQ. Used on D7200, D500 and D750. Thoroughly recommended. At airshows it still might not be suffic...

Re: Photographic technique

I use a Canon 7D and Canon 100-400mm lens. I have noticed that when taking shots of aircraft approaching me I have a tendency to end up with a soft focus. I have tried increasing the shutter speed, changing the aperature to increase DOP but still have this problem. To be honest it has been an issue...

These were here specifically for the exercise. There's a lot of building works going on at Lossie.

Re: Upgrade to Nikon D4?

I use the D500 with a variety of lenses but a lot of flying is with the 200-500 and I'm very happy with it.
The flypast shots here were taken with it.

To be honest I rarely use it at full fps, I usually set CL at 6fps which is plenty for most stuff.

Re: Nikon 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR

I borrowed one for a day but wasn't hugely impressed with it to be honest. OK for general stuff but just not sharp enough across the frame for me and not brilliant over 200mm. Maybe I'm just too critical though.

FINale - Lossiemouth

A huge gathering of people to say goodbye to the Mighty Fin at Lossiemouth. The high level cloud burnt off in time for the flypast, at a stunning 17degC I was sweltering. A sad day but boosted by the flyby of the 9 Sqn old and new. https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7889/47179416391_2ea20dd533_b.jpg htt...

Got to say that for anyone who complains about the 7DII, these show what the camera and decent lens can do. Great clarity helped by some very nice lighting conditions. We had a lot more haze and also overcast with some rain. We had a day at Hyakuri with no Phantoms at all due to lightning in their o...

Re: Scanned slides.

As I understand it, the TIFF is uncompressed. JPG is compressed and each time you save it, it gets further compressed so the quality keeps reducing. Save as a TIFF and keep working on it. When complete you can do a "save as" to JPG if required. My rather simplistic view (right or wrong). M...

Yes we've had the Jag for many years now. There is also an ex RN Jetstream as well.

Lossie 16th Nov

Not seen much on here from the Swiss deployment at Lossie. I managed to scrounge a day off work and made the short trek up the road. A damn cold day but well worth the visit and with loads of Typhoon flying too, it made a great day out. The night shots were a bit hit and miss as it was quite windy a...

Re: Canon 7D Mk2 noise?

At those ISOs I'd expect it to be up there amongst the best crop sensor performers.
Some people suggest the 70D/80D are marginally better but I can't comment having only used Sony and Nikon.
With similar models/sensors, I find my Nikons performs better than Sonys particularly 400+.

Re: Monopod/head recommendation for airshows

The VR in the 200-500 is very good but can't achieve the impossible. When shooting stationary subjects I find it very good indeed but failures during flying are mainly due to my poor panning/following technique. Plenty practice will help and be realistic with the shutter speeds. Don't forget on a DX...

The 7D Mk1 was known to be relatively noisy but I understood the Mk2 was improved. What sort of ISO were you using because that will make a big difference to the noise levels.

Re: Nikon 200-500mm VR on or off with fast jets

I have only used my 200-500mm at a couple airshows and have always left the VR on during the whole time, even during fast jet actions with a shutter speed at 1/1250s. While finding time between seasons to sort through all the photos it feels as from time to time I get an unreasonable amount of unfo...

Re: Canon 70d Noise

I'd heard the 70D was pretty good noise wise.
My Sony A77 is known to be fairly noisy but I rarely if ever use more than 25 Luminance noise reduction in LR (usually 10-15) but then again I rarely exceed ISO400.
I can vouch that the Nikon noise performance is better than Sony as I have both.

Totally agree and that's one reason I'm running another system in parallel. The other being the abysmal support/development on A mount.

The Sony A77II that I use has a 24mp sensor and it also has a built in 1.4x sensor crop so you can have a 12mp image. Not used it since I go the camera as there has been no need for it at Duxford or Old Warden but now I'm getting in some practice with it for that bit extra reach. Brian My personal ...

Just a thought, you said you reviewed the images whilst card was in the camera, have you tried putting the card back in camera and see if you can view the the images?
