Re: A-W Meteor NF.14 WS788 Restoration Project

Cheers chaps! Pete, precision clubbing at its finest...!

The good news is the replacement instruments are in the hands of Royal Fail, and winging their way up-country to us right now...

Re: A-W Meteor NF.14 WS788 Restoration Project

A second update in one day? Almost unheard of... but seeing as I have got the Hali panel placarded up I thought I may as well share it with you. I never liked the idea of riveting brittle pieces of plastic to metal, but here we go... First job, using about 750 feet of masking tape to align and fix i...

Re: A-W Meteor NF.14 WS788 Restoration Project

More doings on various heavy bomber panels yesterday, with more to come today. As well as getting a lot of niggly jobs done on my Lincoln I refinished the Halifax F/Eng's lower panel as I wasn't happy with the paintwork on it, then started building it back up again with new switches sourced https://...

Re: DH Chipmunk WK640/G-BWUV Restoration Project

Shock and indeed horror, I have to report..... not much. Something I thought I would bring to the attention of the forum is the fact that 2021 sees the 75th anniversary of the DHC-1 Chipmunk. One of the Facebook Chippy groups thought this ought to be marked, and so produced a rather natty patch. It ...

Re: A-W Meteor NF.14 WS788 Restoration Project

Back to semi-sensible matters for just a second... I've managed to get a bit more done on the Halifax Flight Engineer's panel set this week in between work etc. The lower panel has now arrived with me also, as it seemed logical to paint this at the same time as the main panel so they match. https://...

Re: A-W Meteor NF.14 WS788 Restoration Project

Cees, it is a privilege to work on components for Europe's only complete Halifax III, and certainly the star of the show as far as YAM is concerned. The lower panel is now with me for remedial work and repainting too, more on that to follow... Looking forward to seeing your Hali panel come to life! ...

Re: A-W Meteor NF.14 WS788 Restoration Project

Further to the conversation regarding the Hali FE's panel lighting, here are the original HP drawings of the panel, detailing the unusual lighting setup which I shall be looking to reinstate https://i.postimg.cc/W1qRbQ3H/148178236-2830180450587312-6280931228293675740-n.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/8CLqL...

Re: A-W Meteor NF.14 WS788 Restoration Project

Ozplane, there is or was the nose section of Halifax VII PN323 at Duxford. Seem to recall reading it has been stripped of its innards though. Being a VII its likely to have the later lighting setup anyway, just to muddy the waters...

Re: A-W Meteor NF.14 WS788 Restoration Project

Should always ask questions! I suspect there were variations between Mark, engine type, probably even shadow manufacturer. As long as this comes out looking like a mk.III panel ought, I'll be happy.

Re: A-W Meteor NF.14 WS788 Restoration Project

I'll put up some pics of the copies of the original drawings I have showing the panel setup. It is a tad odd, I believe the later Mk.VII's were more conventionally lit from the face side of the panel.
Pete, I think that's the Merlin engined Hali panel layout...

I wonder if this will include such gems as Monty's Humber etc?
Monty's Humber is at Lambeth.
Shows how long it's been sice I stepped in the LWH then, it was in there last time I saw it. The time before was at Beverley, in the Army Transport Museum.
God I feel old!

I wonder if this will include such gems as Monty's Humber etc? I certainly hope not, and the merits of what stays and what goes are very carefully considered.

Re: A-W Meteor NF.14 WS788 Restoration Project

While there's not much can be done on the Meteor right now, I have other homework to be on with. T'other day I got the YAM Halifax FE's panel onto the bench for dismantling https://i.postimg.cc/dQ99ZZFr/144860925-2823661987905825-8065498528577697220-n.jpg To the untutored eye it doesn't look bad, an...

Re: DH Chipmunk WK640/G-BWUV Restoration Project

While we are still waiting to get to grips with 640, I thought I'd show you the little tiny seed the idea of a disabled access cockpit grew from. Obviously other museums have already done this, I think the first one I remember seeing and thinking "wow, what a great idea" was when the late and still ...
