Re: A-W Meteor NF.14 WS788 Restoration Project

18/06/2024 Update As July 20th creeps ever nearer, the work to get 788 as ready as we can for her 70th anniversary do continues. On Saturday John and I were in, and after a few weekends off because of his work Tom was back too! I was on photography duties early on, as the Scottish Drivers club were ...

Re: A-W Meteor NF.14 WS788 Restoration Project

People don't realise how big a jet a Meteor NF is, and how much surface area there is!
Chris, yes it's disappointing but realistically I may only have 4 more working days to get 788 ready for her big day, so jollies like Newark go out of the window I'm afraid!

Cheers chaps! Thought my misfortune would give you a good laugh.
The engine wasn't inhibited, but it's been stored right and the weather hasn't got to it.

Re: A-W Meteor NF.14 WS788 Restoration Project

We have to turn our hand to every trade on 788!
At some point later in the week I'll have a proper update posted, but the day job has me run ragged this week so I'm not sure when that will be. But, there'll be repaint news, engine news, much to tell!

Re: A-W Meteor NF.14 WS788 Restoration Project

06/06/2024 Update Some more stuff has happened, so I thought I may as well get you up to date. Also, on this day of days, I thought I'd show you WS788's tenuous link to the events of D-day. So after the last update, John was in on Monday. He has been turning a set of ammo door keys for 788, as her o...

Re: A-W Meteor NF.14 WS788 Restoration Project

There isn't really any need Tony, plus you run the risk of damaging skins. Chemical stripping like we did with the back end isn't a practical solution unless we shut the hangar for a week, so sanding back will do the job. If the paint is still adhering well it can continue its role of being a protec...

Re: A-W Meteor NF.14 WS788 Restoration Project

It's satisfying to have got major areas of the aircraft to the point where we are happy to paint them. It's been a long old path and, as you say, there's a way to go yet.
But, we're getting there!

Re: A-W Meteor NF.14 WS788 Restoration Project

Thanks chaps! Tony, once the fuselage is done, obviously the wings are the next port of call, most likely the outer sections. The jet will probably just stay in her paint, no laquer was applied originaly, so... 29/05/2024 Update For various reasons, I was at YAM yesterday afternoon and today. At the...

Re: Handley Page Halifax at YAM; A Closer Look...

Digging back in the grey matter to when I rebuilt the panel, I think I asked the same question and I think the answer was it shares one of the other gauges, possibly 3 tank, so the one gauge speaks for both tanks.

Re: A-W Meteor NF.14 WS788 Restoration Project

28/05/2024 Update Firstly, I'd like to express our sadness at the news from Coningsby this weekend. BBMF are good friends to YAM, and the loss of the pilot and the aircraft came as a shock to all of us on Saturday. Our thoughts are with the family, friends, and the BBMF team. Pete, thanks for those (many) kind words, and for the supplies! Glad you enjoyed your visit, there's a hell of a lot to see at YAM. Tony, yes you must be overdue a visit! The panel work on the fuselage is done. There is still some to be done on the engine nacelles, and some odd jobs to finish on the...

Re: Handley Page Halifax at YAM; A Closer Look...

The Lanc conversion isn't just a BBMF mod. It was a stock bolt on/off kit which could be used on any Lanc, or Lincoln for that matter as they were all built provisioned for it! Some of the HCU Lancs for example would have it fitted.

Tony, yes, feel free. I had in my mind that they would be of use to fellow modellers! She does need a bit of a tidy but she's not doing too bad. Near permanently living indoors does her the world of good! She's plenty solid enough, and tours on board are not only available but very popular! Booked t...

No, the bomb bay is under that. In the shot looking aft down the fuselage from the Engineer's station, before the mid upper turret you can see the end of the bomb bay.

Re: Handley Page Halifax at YAM; A Closer Look...

Having been in both types, the Halifax is far roomier inside! Much easier to move around, certainly in the fuselage.
It is standard fit, not my secret napping space honest!

Handley Page Halifax at YAM; A Closer Look...

As I covered in the Meteor thread, the Yorkshire Air Museum Halifax has made her annual excursion out of the hangar for the "We'll Meet Again" 1940's event. While she was outdoors, I had to pop on board to close the cockpit windows someone had left open. Well, it would have been rude not t...
