Re: COVID-19: Your Thoughts and it's effects on you.

Another supreme irony, the school was being used as a test site for the virus:

with 400 people, they will need access in and out (out via various routes) plus they would have used the loos.

Re: COVID-19: Your Thoughts and it's effects on you.

Given that schools are open re Key Workers etc, I wonder if the school was closed the following day for deep cleaning? I can't get my head around this story.

given where we are at the moment, I'm struggling to see how hiring the hall out to anyoe would even be considered.

The finance officer/bursar or whoever hired the hall out in the first place needs sacking for gross misconduct.
The hall was hired out? source?

Gov talks about £200 fine (to talk tough) but its actaully £100 if paid within 14 days) leaving £400 spare in this example.

Re: COVID-19: Your Thoughts and it's effects on you.

I don't think that it took place in a school has any relevance in this particular case. We (the tax payer) are funding it. It's not a private pub, hotel etc. When publicly funded instititions are hosting 400 guest events, we should be concerned. A voluntary aided school (VA school) is a state-funde...

Re: RIAT 2021 Participation and Discussion Thread

Just one ellement to consider is the vaccine roll out. When we have as many pros and qualified volunteers working to distribute the vaccine ASAP, I cant see how they can justify taking staff away from this roll to supply medical cover at an airshow. The messages coming out of gov recently are clearl...

Re: COVID-19: Your Thoughts and it's effects on you.

Months ago, in a local Facebook page, a local councillor was calling for IT savy volunteers to configure laptops to get them ready to send out to schools. I run an IT firm and messaged the councillor re the obvious risks re this policy ("what could possibly go wrong") , if this latest story is corre...

Re: RIAT 2021 Participation and Discussion Thread

I think the Glastonbury team have been very fair with this announcement and other organisers of large events in June/July should take a leaf from this. Most punters are very understanding if treated with fairness and transparency. On the other hand, they have every right to be frustrated if events a...

I had to google who was the Shadow Education Secretary. We have a serious issue when Piers is doing a better job than our official opposition. If you can't make a fool out of Williamson now, then when?

Yes, in the UK, the "pre" part of precautionary seems to have been lost within COVID policy.

Re: Is anybody happy with the Brexit white paper?

I need to do more research but my understanding was that it was advisory not because the Commons wanted the option to ignore the result (why have one in the first place) but having it bound in statute would mean creating a legal defintion of what leave meant and a time limit. Consideraing what we ha...

Re: Is anybody happy with the Brexit white paper?

"That’s why we have proportional representation." ? I can't argue with your points re having a poorly educated electorate (my mum is exhibit A), so it becomes a wider issue re Brexit and applies to the whole principle of a referendum. The danger is that it seems to be the losers who conveninetly com...

Re: Is anybody happy with the Brexit white paper?

A couple of points: "“freedom” to study, live, work, settle, build a life in an EU nation. That’s freedom in context. " Lovely in theory but look at the demographic of those who use/exploit these freedoms and contrast that with the many poor and/or working class voters who selcted leave (and turned ...

Re: Is anybody happy with the Brexit white paper?

Still the focus on hard cash. Looking up the definition, I agree that freedom is not a tangible benefit (but it has tangible side effects). But that is changing the definition of a wider "benefit" in order to help the remain cause. There was nothing on the ballot paper that the benefit had to be tan...

Re: Is anybody happy with the Brexit white paper?

Tommy, I delebrately inserted "perception of freedom" - freedom is as much about perception than fact. If voters did not feel they were free within the EU (effectively trapped) , then remainers have to make the argument and convince them (back to empathy again) rather than ignore that concern (justi...

PS why would any politician want a well informed electorate? now we are making progress re , Brexit being a symptom of a much bigger issue.

Re: Is anybody happy with the Brexit white paper?

To create an argument where financial prosperity overides (by default) freedom is pretty dangerous (I hope anyone can see that). Freedom or the perception of freedom is a powerful motivator and rightly given both personal choices and our national past. Without getting too flag wavy, we dont look bac...

Re: Is anybody happy with the Brexit white paper?

Fair points Tommy, but there is a feature within your analysis which I have seen in other remainers comments. Distain maybe too stong a word but looking down on voters whose opinions dont fit the remainers. So weak in mind, so child like in their inability to form their own opinions (unlike remainer...

Re: Is anybody happy with the Brexit white paper?

I think you answered your own question. Zero tangible benefits to you but , for many others, the feeling of freedom, independence etc is tangible and, for many , worth more than money. Brexit was never about a spreadsheet and I'm still surprised that many have not realised that yet. It was about som...
