Re: Aviation Procurement: Winging it? House of Commons report
It's a complex argument, thats for sure. Banning foreign competition from bidding is just asking to have the price rise re the existing bidders. The whole point re the bidding process is to get value for money. Re the question "can what we need be built in the UK", the industry will always...

Re: Aviation Procurement: Winging it? House of Commons report
Yes, fair point, When you consider that we were THE World leaders in VTOL fighters, we seem to be lacking focus/ambition. Either develop a World beating industry and make genuine profits (as re Hawk) or give up and buy "off the shelf", at the moment, we seem to be sitting on the fence

Re: Aviation Procurement: Winging it? House of Commons report
Iv'e read what seem to be some well informed threads on Pprune concerning how much better things would be if we had just gone down the F-15/F-16 route decades ago. All of it seemed to make sense. The one off overheads of development are obviously shared better with huge production runs rather than t...

Re: Mig-23 crash at Thunder over Michigan
good point but there is no mention of hydraulic failure so the pilot had the option to put the aircraft in level flight before ejecting rather than at an angle, therefore giving more height and an earlier chute opening.Obviously, he was denied the option having been "overruled", very inter...

Re: Mig-23 crash at Thunder over Michigan
Happy to be corrected but it's my understanding that the pilot (whilst healthy) makes the call re eject rather than the observer?
also wonder whether they can confirm from the wreckage that the pilot did not pull his handle?

Re: Invasion of Ukraine (Aviation) Discussion
Yes, I understand that but we all know that the aircraft do not fall out of the sky when they reach the LOV limit. It's a binary limit to an analogue issue. (is the analogy of my car's timing belt too simple?) When you get to the first minute of flight over the LOV, the airframe does not suddenly st...

Re: Invasion of Ukraine (Aviation) Discussion
I'm no expert but re the hours left on the airframes, can this rule be bent or ignored considering the situation? it's not as if they have many other options

Re: Security
RIAT (and others such as the AELTC) are on the record saying that they are doing more to prevent attacks so, by definition, before they did more, they did less. The Manchester inquiry is thread drift but the evidence makes it clear that there were huge gaps in the management security planning and ex...

Re: Security
It's interesting that security at Manchester was clearly found to be lacking but what does it say about security (pre-legislation) at other venues (inc RIAT) that now has to be tightened up ?

Re: RIAT 2023 Discuss everything thread
There seems to be a pattern forming over the last 2 or 3 years. The effort taken to put together a varied and imaginatve flying display has been superb and much appreciated by regular fans. But, the same issues/complaints keep coming up with infrastructure "on the gound"

Due to our enhanced 100% bag search requirements for this year, it is taking us longer to enter the showground from the car parks today.

Re: RIAT 2023 Discuss everything thread
Wimbledon are not selling tickets to outside courts tomorrow due to weather. Either Goodwood are playing it very safe or RIAT are taking a big risk. Very tough calls to make. I also wonder if it relates to what insurance they have?

Re: Security
there is much spin in the media etc about increased security at big events. it was claimed to be increased for Wimbledon this year but, in reality, exactly the same as in years before.

Re: RIAT 2023 Discuss everything thread
Can you imagine how many 10,000s of hours have been spent by thousands of people in the year building up to this. Very sad.

Re: RIAT 2023 Discuss everything thread
It's fact that whatever RIAT pull off, there will always be something that is not there and some people who will focus on what is not there rather than what is there. In 20 years time, many will look back and last years line up and this years and be so jealous. We should enjoy every single thing abo...

Re: Disband BBMF?
some very good points made on both sides. I think it's clear that the Reds are far more expensive . Just to stir up some ideas, how about disbanding the reds but sweetening the deal (MSN will be in fits, they need "a bone") by expanding BBMF (Mossie? Catalina?) be nice of they had a sub fo...

Re: Disband BBMF?
One of the known limiting factors for the Lancaster at the moment is Wheels. It's why they aren't "landing on" so much, they're almost out of Wheel sets and they have to be replaced after so many landings. The last batch they had were ex-Shackleton which they purchased from the South Afri...
