Re: RAAF Amberley F-35s

Thanks JJC As for Williamtown, security is much more forgiving there ( or they were ) than at Amberley so photography isn't really an issue. Depending on wind direction can get shots from Medowie Road either of take-offs and landings, if they are landing over Medowie Road you can get some nice close...

RAAF Amberley F-35s

The 10th of December saw the official arrival to the Royal Australian Air Force of the F-35A for 3 Squadron, to be based at RAAF Williamtown in New South Wales. Australia currently has 10 F-35As with 8 aircraft based at Luke AFB and these are the first Australian aircraft to come to the country. At ...

Re: Nikon D500 Question

I’ve just started using the D500 & 200-500, switched from a 5DMK111 & 100-400. The quality is astounding so far but I wouldn’t recommend the 200-500 for a beginner really, it was a shock to me just how much heavier it is than what I was using. If weight was an issue I would be wary of buying...

Re: RAAF Amberley Exercise Lightning Viper - Updated

Thanks for the comments guys, we don't get a great variety of military aircraft in Australia often so was a great chance to shoot something different. A problem that we have here is that rules seem to be different for different bases, for example at RAAF Williamtown there is a museum outside the bas...

RAAF Amberley Exercise Lightning Viper - Updated

Hi All, I haven't been on here for a long time, mainly due to the fact of not much interesting to photograph. However over the last 3 weeks RAAF Amberley has been host to the F-16s of the 18th Aggressor Squadron from Eielson Air Force Base Alaska, for Exercise Lightning Viper. Aircraft were flying t...

Some fantastic images here, standout for me is the Sea King perched on what I assume is a cliff. The Merlin with the stripes is interesting.

USN at RAAF Amberley

The USN currently has EA-18G Growlers (3) deployed on exercise to RAAF Amberley. The Growlers are from VAQ-132 Scorpions & are in the final stages of a 2 week exercise with 1 Squadron. Unfortunately most of the flying is happening around midday with the light being very harsh at this time of yea...

RAAF Amberley Heritage Centre

Hi All, Today the heritage centre at RAAF Amberley held their monthly open day. Highlight for the day which drew a large crowd was that there were 3 of 5 recently repainted F-111s in attendance before they are removed to other museums around Australia. A total of 7 have been allocated & were rep...

RAAF Williamtown (Pic Heavy)

Decided last week to drive down the east coast to RAAF Williamtown, a round trip of about 1600 kms (1000) miles & almost 18 hours driving. Well worth the drive though as 20mins after I got there, 11 Hornets returned from exercise in Townsville & conducted a formation flypast before breaking ...

Thanks for the comments guys much appreciated. Dan, there will be 6 Wedgetails eventually, operated by No 2 Squadron at RAAF Williamtown. A30-005 has just taken part in Red Flag Alaska. Is good to see an Aussie presence for Waddington. Red Dragon, Amberley isn't a great base for taking photos. Depen...

Re: Shoulder straps

I use the RS-5 strap & have found it to work well once you get used to it. For myself I like the way the camera & lens sit alongside your body with this system. If you do decide to get one always make sure that the fasteners are tight as they can occasionally come undone, have had it happen ...

Hi All, Haven't been here much lately but thought I would share my take on this years Avalon Airshow. Fortunately the USAF sent a large contingent of aircraft to help fill out the ramp. There were 2 B1-Bs, 1 B-52-H,1 KC-135R,1 KC-10, 3 F-16s, 1 C-130J, 1 C-17 & the 2 F-22s, a nice range of aircr...

Australian Army ARH Tiger

A few images of the Australian Armys' ARH ( Armed Reconnaissance Helicopter ), can't have an attack helicopter as it might upset the neighbours. They aren't regular participants of any Airshows & are quite rare to be able to catch in the air, as they are based at the top of the country. 1. http:...
