RAF Coningsby 10/04/24 - Typhoon Practice

Possibly my last chance to get up to Coningsby to catch a Typhoon practice, the weather gods were very very kind, for the morning at least. about an hour after the display jet landed the skies were filled with thick clouds then followed by rain. A few from a very brief morning at the fence 1 https:/...

RAF Coningsby - Turbo1 Practice 04/04/24

A drive out to Coningsby on a dull and damp morning, with the hopes that the weather would break at some point, which never happened. Not until after the practice display, typical. Spent the day down at the Visitors carpark end, for a change. Not a terrible day considering the rubbish weather. Nice ...

RAF Waddington - Red Arrows Training 02/04/24

Trying to squeeze a few more trips in before the team head to sunnier climbs. Quite lucky with the weather during the day, still yet to catch a 9ship practice 1 https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53629676288_661eb25966_h.jpg DSC_8999 by Michael Hallam , on Flickr 2 https://live.staticflickr.com/655...

Some belters in there, the formation shots are great
Cheers Dom. Came away thinking Waddington was better viewing than when they were at Scampton. Hopefully a few more days back there to catch a few 9 ship practices

Red Arrows Winter Training

Had been a couple of years since I last went to watch the Reds during their winter training, wasn't sure how it would be around Waddington in comparison to Scampton. But I was pleasently surprised 1 https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53526466571_31eac14f32_h.jpg DSC_6421 by Michael Hallam , on Flic...

RAF Lakenheath 19/01/24

With the weather looking perfect, another drive out to Suffolk was on the cards. Just a shame it was a late start, first launch at 12:40 and not much to write home about for quick climbs. 17 launches including the 4 RAVN Hawks - stunning little aircraft they are! A shame to only have 5 Eagles go up ...

That first shot's a beauty Michael. Thanks toom. Couldn't have asked for a better break into the circuit, right over the top. Super... crisp, winter light is magical. Really cannot beat it Great set. Excellent panning on #5! Thanks Alpha, took a while to get back into the panning technique but got ...

A bitterly cold day at Coningsby, but the crisp winter light always helps make up for it 1 https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53466301622_efd57b34fd_h.jpg RAF Coningsby 15/01/24 by Michael Hallam , on Flickr 2 https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53467206541_03c160665a_h.jpg RAF Coningsby 15/01/24 b...

Re: A grey and dull last Lakenheath trip of the year

Some super-sharp images in poor light! Thanks mate, very impressed with the autofocusing on the Z9 Very grim day at the fence, the weather promised clear skies and sun, alas it never materialised. BBC forecast fooled you too huh? So annoying, but you did well in the conditions. Yes, BBC forecast pl...

A grey and dull last Lakenheath trip of the year

Very grim day at the fence, the weather promised clear skies and sun, alas it never materialised. But it was a good first outing with the Z9 to get a feel for the camera. Given the poor light all day, it performed very well 1 https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53400273963_fe1d042b91_h.jpg DSC_1813 ...

Number 12’s a belter! Cheers mate, love a good wide angle sun burst photo Some very nice images here. #4 in particular is proof that backlighting sometimes works well for aircraft photography! Yeah, tricky light at times, but the backlighting worked well this time. Sometimes just have to make the b...

Lakenheath 01/12/23

My last trip being back in April, a day at the fence was well overdue and with some sun being promised I braved a chilly day at Lakenheath. Nice to finally catch the Skyhawk and Alphajets. Just a shame I ended up the wrong end for the quick climbs, after initially being at the correct end first thin...

Excellent stuff. Very jealous! I used to have a Brands Hatch group media pass in the early 1990s and can imagine the opportunities. Brands Hatch in the 90s! Oooooo that would have been special. I love Brands, best circuit in the country Love these, especially the one (9) in the spray. I've always f...

Re: How do you store your gear?

All my gear is stored in a Think Tank Airport Security V3. Great for lugging it all around on wheels, and plenty of space for everything. With regards to damp gear, just make sure you thoroughly dry everything off once you get home. I usually leave lenses and bodies out of the bag for a day to allow...

Wow, thank you all for the kind comments. I’m glad they were enjoyable to look though

Being a British Superbikes photographer, my style of photography at the tracks slowly creeps into the aviation side, which helps to produce some different images away from ‘the norm’

Thanks. Looks like I know what I'm reading up on this evening.
You'll have a switch on the side of the lens, will have infinity and then something like 2.5m to infinity. Set it to the later, no need to have the lens focusing on anything closer. Will help focus quicker for you

Re: Back Button Focusing

Sorry to ask what is probably a complete novice question but... Could bbf help prevent .. "seeking"? Thats my term for it (so probably wrong), but I found at the BoB show at Duxford that even though I'd framed a takeoff, in decent light (shooting from the tank bank) my 70-300 kept going o...
