Re: Flying Boats at seaside airshows
Insurance and crew currency, combined with it being very easy to get stuck in the water unable to take off again, sea conditions, risk of damage through debris (and there is a lot of it off Clacton) and also having to go through the whole anti corrosion thing after landing on salt water. The last at...

Re: Travelling VS with Camera Gear
When you get to the bag drop tell them it's camera gear and they'll tag it, then you can carry on with no issues, regardless of weight. If you are upstairs on the 747 fleet it probably won't fit in the overhead lockers though so will have to go in the wardrobe.

Re: Boom? I cant think of a better name....
Why you would want to sell seats at only £5,000 is beyond me - you would pay more then that per seat to fly transatlantic on a GV or GLEX...... As for the Boom, I think the Aerion is going to leave it in limbo, and Aerion already have firm orders on the AS2 and the launch customer now has a European...

Re: ID question
Bit of a late post, but those massive tyres are called "tundra tires", and they are an oversized tubed balloon tyre charged to quite a low pressure. You can land pretty much anywhere including in streams, rocky uneven ground and on snow to a degree and they are puncture proof. Fitted to Cu...

Re: future of G-HHAA PROJECT ???
The future of air warfare training in the UK is a big contract that quite a few people are aiming for post 2019. You've got the current people Cobham and Babcock (who I hope carry on the contract), draken from the US, and Qinetiq with their scorpion no one wants to buy. Thats not totally accurate, ...

Re: Farnborough - a shadow of its former self?
Well today I went with my trade ticket, don't think I'll be going again. Static is quite thin on the ground with a stupid fence layout with lots of dead ends and compounds. To get in the compounds you have to go through the chalets, to get in the chalet you must be invited.... Saab, P&W and Boei...

PA equipment was the biggest annoyance yesterday, seemed a bit temperamental like when the USAF commentator announced the heritage arrival arriving from r...

Re: FAA Museum Lighting
The lighting in the carrier exhibition is awesome. The corners and the ceiling dissappear into blackness making it perfect for photography. If you take a tripod and go for a nice long exposure you don't get bodies in your shots either. I asked the faam before I went and a nice lady emailed me back w...

Re: Whatever happened to the bruntingthorpe Tristars?
Nope. But obviously there are limitations as to what you can do with them. Also because pretty much every authority globally seems to have a bilateral agreement with the FAA it's a lot easier to transfer from an N onto another registry then it is from any EASA reg (unless it's onto another EASA reg ...

Re: Question about WW2 RAF camoflauge
1. To make the roundal stand out. 2. To not totally cheese off the French public (just the vichy French) as it was decided that a US assault with British forces in support would not have the same emotional impact as a British and American invasion would, at a time when the British were desperately t...

Broadsword is 2Excel's ICAO callsign. Oddly enough it used to be used by Air Foyle when they had the OSR Hercules.

Re: Fairey Rotodyne
X3 was a compound design, consider it a conventional helicopter but without an anti torque tail rotor - provided by assymetric prop pitches instead with the wings also providing lift in forward flight. The reasoning being it was then the main rotor would spin slower to prevent blade stall on the ret...

Re: Fairey Rotodyne
The holder of a lot of Fairey Rotordyne related artifacts is the Berkshire Aviation Museum, which until I accidentally found I'd never heard of. They have this Fairey Jet Gyrodyne as well, which most of the technology which went into the Rotordyne used as I understand including the extremely loud ti...

If you ask the curator Andrew Simpson nicely, he'll go and take a photo of whatever you want. Or if you let him know you are coming with a valid reason he'll let you go off the carpet for a more in depth look at things and a peer into gear wells, bomb bays etc. For the survey they are also photograp...

Yes, Reno and Toulouse and probably Reno, Toulouse and Cleveland. They are apparently low compression turbofan jets not rockets in a very long slender nacelle with a small inlet to help with high speed compression problems manafucturer tbc but the original Aerion SBJ had P&W JT8D's presumably wi...

Surprised nobody has mentioned Aerion AS2 yet.
It's legit, and happening. Lots of good people linked to it, including the better ones from Hawker Beechcraft. Sadly I think it's 10 years too late as the what was Russian wealth market was prime for it.
