Re: Cosford Airshow 2024 - 9th June 2024
I wonder if because of its hovering abilities it will land at Cosford? I recall some years ago at RIAT we had a form of display from a US F35B. It did a hover/land but I understand special plates or similar had to be installed to protect the runway. Not sure of exactly the detail but in the circums...

Re: Cornwall aviation heritage centre
A quick visit to the site today revealed some interesting developments. The Lightning and Jet Provost appear to have been moved ‘next door’ to the old museum where lifesize fibreglass models of various aircraft are made. The Varsity seems to be undergoing dismantling- not sure precisely what’s going...

Re: Cornwall aviation heritage centre
Here’s some photos I took of the centre in the summer. I haven’t been there for a while but it’s difficult now to believe it was ever there. All very sad and in particular I’m hoping both the wonderful Varsity and Canberra can be saved but am sceptical at this time. https://live.staticflickr.com/655...

Re: Cornwall aviation heritage centre
That's the one, thanks for the confirmation and link! Sad to see it broken up, but at least part of it went to a good home. I well recall the VC10 arriving at Newquay in 2013 amid a fanfare and celebrations. The pilot Milliken was interviewed by a TV station and the various flight manuals handed ov...

Re: Cosford Conservation Centre Open Week
Sadly no Open Week this year (2023). Here’s a response to my enquiry back in June: “Good Morning. I am sorry to hear of your disappointment and have passed your comments on so that they can be taken into consideration. Unfortunately, due to different events and projects the museum has running this y...

Re: Bruntingthorpe Cold War Jets 2014
How long will the contract with Cox Automotive last? The sad thing is that the larger jets, all corralled in an enclosure at the other end of the airfield, will easily start to deteriate if not maintained. It’s hard to believe the three large jets have a long term future. We are unlikely to see fas...

Re: Cornwall aviation heritage centre
Paid a quick visit to the site today. A desperately sad scene. The VC10 is looking very dirty and stained, a far cry from the lovely jet that I saw arriving there with a fanfare in 2013. The Lightning is present and hopefully will be saved. I’m less optimistic for the Canberra and Varsity which seem...

Re: Cornwall aviation heritage centre
I think money really is the only insurmountable problem in aviation. Do you seriously think you couldn't fly a Vulcan, Lightning or Harrier somewhere on earth if you had enough money to manufacture and run it? The USA is very bureaucratic in comparison to lots of less developed countries, and they ...

Re: Cornwall aviation heritage centre
Anything can be put back in the air. It all depends on how much $$ you want to spend. A very glib statement that shows little understanding of the regulatory framework operators have to exist under. Try telling the CAA “I’ve got lots of money and want to fly my Vulcan/Lightning/Harrier*” *Delete as...

Re: Cornwall aviation heritage centre
Irrespective of who is responsible for the situation, more aviation heritage is being lost. Gone. Forever. It is truly sad. I do agree with you. Just one real wish from me: that the Varsity gets rescued in one piece - I assume it was readily dismantled to reach there in the first place. If there’s ...

Re: Cornwall aviation heritage centre
Direct your ire not against the Council but against the management of the museum, which squandered what they had by sticking their heads in the sand and taking any airframe that came along believing they would be too big to be forced out. Even during the extension period, when they knew what was go...

Re: Cornwall aviation heritage centre
Bizarre isn’t it - they have to sell their historic airframes to fund cutting up their historic airframes! What a debacle; don’t you just love Cornwall County Council? Don’t forget this is Conservative dominated, a party which professes to want to safeguard our heritage. The Hypocrisy is breathtaki...

Re: Cornwall aviation heritage centre
If anyone's curious about the status of other hangars on the airport site, they're certainly being well utilised in accordance with Cornwall Council's plans to maximize value for money for taxpayers Cornwall Council slammed for storing thousands of unused bins at a cost of £300,000 The council has ...

Re: Cornwall aviation heritage centre
I visited the erstwhile centre earlier today. It is simply unbelievable how the site has changed. It is now barren and swept clear completely of everything associated with the former museum. Only the hanger and concrete hardstanding remain. The Varsity and Canberra are parked on adjacent grass/concr...

Re: RIAT 2023 Discuss everything thread
All in all not a bad show given the inclement weather. We were at Kempsford from Wednesday to Monday so had the benefit of the good conditions on Weds/Thursday and Monday. However for me it was the ‘bad weather’ flying that inspired; witness the incredible RAF Typhoon curtailed display on Friday in ...

Has anything been said why red arrows don't use smoke on take off anymore? That was always fun to see Because they’re attempting to make their display as mundane as possible don’t you know? An interesting if somewhat cynical response. The Saudi Hawks each used copious volumes of smoke on their ‘in ...

Re: RIAT 2023 Discuss everything thread
Not a bad day here at Kempsford. Loved the A400/Tornado flypasts and plenty of nice and varied arrivals to keep us interested. Slightly disappointed that the B52s flew straight in but not surprising as the arrival schedule was running more and more behind. The ME262 entourage run and break was parti...

Re: Weather watch 23
Kempsford is already muddy. Hopefully the car parks hold up okay! If the showers stay this heavy, make the most of every display that flies because I can see blind luck being a factor in what we manage to see and we could end up with a situation like a few years ago when the Pat Aguila were hit by ...

Re: Weather watch 23
We’ve seen this before. Some years ago I remember most of the morning being canned through low cloud and the most we had was a Belgium F16 taxying up and down by what was I gather a peeved, reluctant and frustrated pilot! Then we usually get a few helicopters and before long the cloud lifts and we’r...
