Re: The UKAR politics thread

By what measure is that “a lot”? (A genuine question, I add. Just wondering what metric/measure you’re using). Well, perhaps you would like to consider which counties of England and/or Wales you would like to see disappear in their entirety if the twentieth was all in one place. To put it another w...

Re: The UKAR politics thread

According to the Land Cover Atlas of the UK published in 2017 just 6% of the UK is built on. It also states that 83% of the population live in urban areas thus giving rise to the perception by many that the country is over crowded and that there is no more room. I'm quite shocked to hear that one-t...

Re: The UKAR politics thread

I thought that the argument is people would apply directly from embassies or centres in Afghanistan/Iraq/Ethiopia. If accepted they would be allowed in. Unless I misunderstood they wouldn’t arrive, be processed in the UK potentially rejected, and then subsequently deported. If you arrive here illeg...

Re: COVID-19: Your Thoughts and it's effects on you.

I'm off on a cruise in just over 4 weeks, I don't mind having to do a PCR test on return, just glad I hadn't booked the Day 2 LFD tests yet! If this virus is mutating so rapidly and what we know about waining protection after xyz months - is it time to seriously consider putting a requirement in pl...

Re: COVID-19: Your Thoughts and it's effects on you.

Does anyone think the public at large will be following these restrictions any more? No. Indeed there is evidence that they didn't during the last lockdown and that even during the first lockdown compliance was less than most would have believed (including me I admit). https://guernseypress.com/new...

Re: COVID-19: Your Thoughts and it's effects on you.

So while I think anybody preaching against vaccination should be lobbed into the nearest oubliette and left to rot, anti—vax feeling isn’t just a product of the internet age and can be down to more than some teenager spouting behind closed doors. I think this is true, but it’s also impossible to de...

Re: F-35 Ooops?

It’s probably worth waiting until something official comes out before speculating. Once something official comes out the fun goes out of speculating! Exactly, what's the harm? In this instance? Probably not much, but if it becomes second nature or a habit of all of us to speculate on any...

Re: COVID-19: Your Thoughts and it's effects on you.

Let me use an example to show what “material” means - vaccines materially prevent serious illness from the disease. In that they are between 80-95% likely to stop serious illness from the disease. Whereas vaccines reduce transmission by 13% from 38% risk to 25% risk. That is not “material” for the ...

Re: F-35 Ooops?

A powerful piece of evidence to Whitehall that just ordering 48 examples is insufficient (that number being pulled out of the arse and informed by it being the maximum of 24 on each carrier at “surge” capacity). And that’s to say nothing of maintenance rotations, storage, training requirements, exe...

Re: COVID-19: Your Thoughts and it's effects on you.

Beyond climate change, I think that online misinformation and radicalisation is one of the most pressing matters humanity faces in the coming years/decades. Speaking of misinformation, the first considerable use of the phrase "fake news" was the Orange One labelling any news he didn't lik...

Re: COVID-19: Your Thoughts and it's effects on you.

I do think, however, that governments should use this as a lesson to see just how far a significant (but not a majority) of the public are misinformed, toxified, even to the risk of their own lives, by online misinformation. We should have had a wake up call with the 2016 EU referendum and the pres...

Re: COVID-19: Your Thoughts and it's effects on you.

There's no doubt the misinformation is a huge problem. It is strange that many who utter "don't believe everything you read or see in the mainstream media" do seem to believe all that they read on the internet. Much of the rubbish we hear about comes from bad actors with clear purposes in...

Yesterday I agreed with Derek. The loss of all that recorded fun hit me right in the pit of the stomach. Today I agree with Tommy, completely, if for no other reason that surely our community is more resilient than that? I had a long fallow period and then got a couple of honourable mentions, which ...

Nice build Derek, worth persevering with!

Worth remembering that the B45 was also an RAF type for a short time, a small number were painted in RAF colours and flown by RAF crews for Operation Jiu Jitsu.
The accounts of that are proper hair-raising stuff!
