Re: Sigma 500mm F/4.5 EX DG - Update
Just an update. I tried a used copy of the the Sigma 500mm 4.5 for a couple of weeks and was not satisfied. The weight made it far more cumbersome to use and travel with than I expected. The results I was achieving were not satisfactory, either focus was off or the IQ was rather poor. Back it went. ...

Re: Sigma 500mm F/4.5 EX DG
Gents thanks for the replies. Mick I believe I have seen your Sigma shots on flickr (You can ignore my flickr mail!), some great stuff and has tipped the balance to me giving it a shot. Found an example on ebay for less than 2K Canadian with a decent return policy and 6 month Warranty. Will audition...

Re: Sigma 500mm F/4.5 EX DG
Thanks for the reply. Alas, cost plays a role here... this being hobby for me. On this side of the pond here are the price differentials: Used Sigma 500mm 4.5 ~$2000 Canadian(tax in) Used Canon 500mm 4.5 ~$3-4000 Sigma 500mm 4.0 ~$9000 Sigma 150-600C ~$1300 Sigma 150-600S ~$2700 For the right bargai...

Sigma 500mm F/4.5 EX DG
Folks, Heading back across the pond for RIAT 2018. I use a Canon 6DII which I am delighted with, but I am looking for a new long lens solution. Disappointingly, my Tamron 150-600mm has a lower hit rate, and lesser image quality than my Canon 400mm 5.6 + 1.4x TC combo. The Prime/TC combo still provid...

Travel from Swindon
Folks, This summer will be my fourth visit to RIAT. For the past three outings, we have stayed in Swindon, took a rental car or taxi on arrivals/departures days and the shuttle bus on show days (Thus avoiding traffic snarls). For the first two years, this worked well. Last year however the shuttle w...

A few from CYQX shot during the 2000-2004 period. They were a common sight at Gander and St. John's and are already terribly missed. https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3748/13387982534_ce091d4072_c.jpg https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3751/13476868713_ea610728b0_c.jpg https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7408/1...

Re: Aviation Nation / Nellis AFB Open House 2014 List update
After missing the F-35 at RIAT/F'borough the summer I was concerned that the event schedule on the Nellis Facebook page had a couple of glaring omissions. Nellis addressed this with a FB comment though: "F4 will be on display and participating in the Korean re-enactment. F-35 will be on display...

Thursday Photo Walk
Was there ever ever a formal announcement/explanation as to the photo walk? On Thursday we went from the P+V to the red lot Friat shuttle point and waited for the shuttle that we were told would pick us up. This was so we could get to the Friat enclosure for the photo walk cut off. When no shuttle a...

Enclosure vs P+V
Last year, for the Thursday, i spent the first 3/4s or so of the day at the P+V to photograph what I could have aircraft on approach, I only moved to the enclosure roughly in time for static walk deadline (not wanting 'just' taxi shots). If the forecast is roughly equal for the various days , it is ...

Re: Trade Day Air Display Times
Thanks, Farnborough replied, and they are checking on the Heathrow shuttle times. I expect they will get an answer from the operator quicker then I would. Thanks for the Felthan Station tip, that looks to be an ideal alternative should the Heathrow Shuttle not work out. I went into the 'smoke' on la...

Re: Trade Day Air Display Times
Thanks, The shuttles to other destinations in London,, run as late as 18:00, so I am hoping that this is a typo or oversight. I am staying at a Heathrow area Hotel, so I may have to take one of the 1800 shuttles into London, and take the subway to Hatton Cross station. I've emailed the show and the ...

Trade Day Air Display Times
Folks,
I see that for the Tuesday trade day, the last shuttle bus back to Heathrow is set for 1620.
When does the flying display typically end on trade days... if I take that last bus will I miss part of the display?
thanks
Mark

Re: RIAT Ticket Mailing Times
Last year my tickets arrived on June 27th, the show was later last year so that gave about 3 weeks to spare (2 weeks really when you allow for travel). I live in Eastern Canada so I would expect delivery times to be comparable in the US (ie our postal systems are equally reviled). I am still waiting...

Re: How are you viewing the show this year?
Flying into Heathrow from Newfoundland on the Saturday before. On Tuesday I will take coach/rail to Swindon where I am booked into the Campanile. I'll be meeting an American friend in Swindon, we both have Mach three passes, so we'll be at the park/view and showground from Wednesday through Monday. ...

Re: How many (R)IAT's???
Last year was my first. Elected to do Mach 3 and was thoroughly blown away. I had decided by the end of last year's show to head back across the pond in the near future and the line up for this year convinced me that there was no need to wait...Mach 3 again this year. Really looking forward to to th...

Re: Swindon Shuttle Bus
Hello, I took the shuttle on both days last year. Would've been on the first bus out Saturday morning (No queue, just arrive, buy ticket and board) but I realized that I had left my FRIAT pass at the hotel, so I ended up on another bus roughly 30 minutes later. More of a queue at that point but I wa...

Re: RIAT 2013 (post your feedback in this thread)
Thought I would provide some thoughts from a slightly different perspective - a first time RIAT attendee from Canada. RIAT has been on my radar for a while and started considering going early this winter. Leading up to the event, most, or at least most vocal, opinions held that this was not the year...

Re: How will you be taking in the show this year?
Folks, Thanks again for the help so far, a few more questions come to mind: 1. On departures day when does everything generally clue up? Trying to get an idea as to when I hop the train back to London. 2. Are there any camera gear/bag restrictions? Have been through this pain at Nellis... 3. FRIAT s...

Re: How will you be taking in the show this year?
Folks, Coming from Canada, I am rather looking forward to the show. Being used to Canadian/American shows the line up looks incredible with a nice balance of fast movers, display teams and heavies. It will be nice to see a Vulcan in the air rather than the static version we have at Goose Bay. I'll b...
