Re: A D-Day Journal

First sentence on June 7th could be "arrived within sight of coast about 22.00 hrs", so could be the final entry for June 6th?

Fascinating document, thanks for posting. Looking forward to the remainder.

The "unintelligible" section on 5th June appears to read "Saw HMS Nelson Destroyer shooting at mine drifting through convoy".

Pretty sure it shouldn't behave like that. I'm using an Eye-One device and once the profiling procedure is complete and saved, it loads the profile at startup and doesn't change. You could try uninstalling the software and reinstalling (and delete any profiles you have saved) - you may just have a b...

Re: To SLR or not SLR?

Apologies for the delay in replying Mooshie1956. Unfortunately the pandemic has meant I haven't had the opportunity to use the Z 50 at an airshow, but I have used it at my local airfields here in Lincolnshire, and it coped perfectly well with flying shots of Hawks and Texans at Valley recently. The ...

From a Nikon user perspective can I suggest a couple of alternatives (all prices as per WEX): DSLR Nikon D7500 + 18-140mm f/3.5-5.6 lens kit (equivalent 27-210mm) £1,149 Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6E AF-P lens (equivalent 105-450mm) £535 Mirrorless Nikon Z 50 + FTZ adaptor £899 Nikon Z 18-140mm f/3.5-6....

Nlkon are rumoured to be releasing updates of their Z 6 and Z 7 in the not too distant future, with twin processors and two memory card slots, so it may be worth waiting. I have a Z 50 (crop sensor) for general photography, and It coped well with approach shots of Phenoms/Prefects/Tutors at Cranwell...

Both still at Waddington but haven't flown for several years.

Re: Nikon AF-S 70-200mm f/4 G ED VR TeleConverter

D500 and D7500, both crop sensor. Crop sensor won't affect the autofocus and recent Nikon cameras can autofocus at f8, so an f4 lens with 2x converter (making it an f8 lens) will still autofocus (not sure about the D7200 though).

Re: Nikon AF-S 70-200mm f/4 G ED VR TeleConverter

I regularly use a Nikon 1.4x converter on Nikon 70-200 f2.8 and 300 f4 lenses and see negligible loss in image quality. Bear in mind that adding a 1.4 converter to your 70-200 f4 lens will make it the equivalent of a 98-280 f5.6 I also have a Nikon 1.7x converter but very rarely use it - autofocus i...

ZH104 went to us today for storage, leaving 103 and 106 that have flown in the last year!

Although it hasn't flown for a while, ZH101 has carried out ground runs (most recently in November & December) so is still active-ish!

Re: Calling Nikon D7500 users

I use a Nikon D7500 as a second body to my D500, usually with a Nikon 300mm f/4E PF (sometimes with a 1.4x converter) or Nikon 70-300mm AF-P FX lens and have been very happy with the results. Autofocus on flying aircraft is excellent (I can't detect any significant difference from the D500), as is i...

Re: Which would give me better results

A 2x converter should work OK with your 70-200 f/2.8, but you will lose two stops, making your lens f/5.6 (not a Canon user, so can't advise on how much image quality you may lose). With a 1.4x converter you lose one stop, ie f/4.

I have also used Panamoz to buy Nikon gear in the past without any issues.

They seem to get good reviews and as you say offer their own warranty scheme.

I have also used HDEW but they no longer seem to sell Nikon gear!

Another vote for the Nikon 300 f4, although I use the newer PF lens. Very sharp, compact and light, even with a 1.4x converter attached.

Bad news is that Nikon have just hiked up their prices!

Re: Airshow RAF Cranwell 1974?

I can recall attending a Lord Taverners Cricket match at Cranwell in (I think) the early 1970's at which the Reds displayed. I believe they may have been regular events from the late 1960's to mid 1970's so could have been one of those?

Have you checked which focus point is set? If anything other than the centre one then your camera could be trying to focus on the sky rather than the aircraft.

Re: Nikon 2nd body dilema

I purchased a D7100 in 2014 and kept my D300s as a second body. The image quality and low light performance of the D7100 is superior to the D300s, so much so that I found I rarely used the D300s. Ended up trading in the D300s for a D7200 last year and happily use the D7100 and D7200 alongside each o...

Re: 7D mk 2 batterys

I regularly use www.premier-ink.co.uk for memory cards, ink and batteries.

I've had a quick look and they have a choice of three for the Canon 7D mkII from Blumax and Hahnel, ranging from £16.99 to £44.99.

I've used Blumax batteries in my Nikons in the past and they have been as good as the Nikon originals.

Rob68, I suspect you are referring to the old Nikkor 80-400D ?

The newer 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G VR AF-S is a very different lens, very sharp and fast focussing, but still expensive!

Re: RIAT lenses

70-200mm on a D300s/D90 should be OK for most landing/take-off shots. 120-300mm will give you more options on different angles, but may be too long at the 120mm end for the larger types. As for static, your 24-70mm may not be wide enough on a D300s/D90. I use a 16-85mm on my D7100/D300s but an 18-XX...

Re: Shooting into the sun

I'm pretty sure filters won't help.

Use exposure compensation - you may need anything from +.03 to +1 (or even higher) depending on the strength and angle of the backlighting.

Use Raw rather than Jpeg and you'll have some leeway with burnt out skies.

Use a lens hood!
