Re: Invasion of Ukraine (Aviation) Discussion
I may have missed it being discussed elsewhere, but it seems commercial flights are using Russian airspace again. Is that a gradual shift or was a decision made to allow it again? I noticed them on FR24 today. For example Amsterdam to Bejing overlying southern Russia. Airlines from countries that a...

Re: Accident at Haneda
Regarding luggage in overhead compartments, can these compartments not be automatically locked en masse by the crew when an airliner is coming in to land or approaching any other scenario where luggage might fall out, etc.? Apologies if I’m saying or asking something completely stupid. Not without ...

Duxford Flying Finale 2023
A very sunny, but sometimes chilly, day at Duxford for the final day of the season. Sun being lower than in the summer made it fairly difficult to even see some of the displays, not helped by me forgetting my sunglasses. As it is at Duxford though, it got better as the afternoon went on, cumulating ...

Re: Duxford flying finale
I park down a lane on the other side of the M11 now. It's about a 15 minute walk, but you are guaranteed to be away easily from that point.

Re: Russian airliner forced to land in corn field
Yes fair point, would the engine readouts not show that they're working overtime? And back to my original point, wouldn't the pilots have heard and felt the vibrations from the aerodynamic effects of the gear down? I certainly do as a passenger. Correct, the engine readouts would show a higher thru...

Re: Russian airliner forced to land in corn field
I've never flown an airliner but as a passenger it's normally very obvious when the gear is down, it's very noisy and you can feel the vibrations and buffeting caused by the aerodynamic effects so how an experienced crew would not notice that I find hard to believe. More importantly (and I am makin...

Re: Russian airliner forced to land in corn field
Update of what happened: On Sep 26th 2023 Rosaviatsia reported during the final approach to Omsk, while extending the landing gear, there had been a green hydraulic failure prompting the crew to initiate a go around. The landing gear lever was placed into the up position, but the landing gear did no...

Duxford Battle of Britain 2023 - Saturday
A sunny Saturday spent at Duxford for the Battle of Britain airshow. Sunlight was very harsh, especially initially, which made photography a bit tricky. Still a fairly successful day though. These are what I managed, all taken from the M11 end. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53196960316_a253f99...

Re: Russian airliner forced to land in corn field
Let's put Russia right at the top of "hell no I'm never flying there". Serious questions need to be asked about WHY it landed in a field in the first place. An A320 can fly with no hydraulics at all, it's not a reason to put it in a field. One single hydraulic system failing? Other than a...

Re: Duxford Battle of Britain Airshow 2023 - 16th & 17th September
I'm a little bit pink... :sunny: Great day down the M11 end. Lots of unusual formations, especially enjoyed the Nimrod & Swordfish. I did wonder how feasible it was for the Catalina to form up with the Swordfish given the performance difference. Finale was great even though it was a bit shorter ...

Re: Duxford Battle of Britain Airshow 2023 - 16th & 17th September
Just started planning my train journey, accepting there is a bus from Audley End, and find out there are also engineering works affecting London Bridge (where I was going to walk to Liverpool Street from). I'd have to leave home at 8 (instead of half 9 for the car) to make the start of the show with...

Shuttleworth Flying Proms 2023
A few from a pleasant evening at Old Warden. Wonderful displays, but the light was very frustrating. Clear skies with the exception of a stubborn bank of cloud out to the west! Also my first time photographing pyro displays. Came out ok, just not something you get to practice very often. https://liv...

Re: Flying Proms 2023
Weather is looking good at the moment, but will hang on until later in the week before booking.
Went last year and thoroughly enjoyed it. Good one for me to take the other half too as it's more than just 'planes'!

Re: RIAT 2023 Discuss everything thread
Sitting down some days later to finally look through the official programme, it hadn't occurred to me that the reason the Lancaster/Typhoon display didn't happen wasn't weather or tech related, but it simply wasn't part of the weekends displays. Seems strange at the largest show of the year. I did ...

Re: Air Shows 2024
Unless there is more to come/detail, it looks like they are dropping to one evening airshows (+ proms). Bit disappointing that of all the dates they could choose, they have clashed with RIAT.

Re: RIAT 2023 Discuss everything thread
But yes, I agree about the RAF commentary too. To be honest, I don't think the BBMF need any - let the Merlins do the talking. To be honest, it was a bit odd to hear commentary when the BBMF were displaying. The vast majority of shows* do exactly as you said, let the Merlins do it! *In my experienc...

Re: RIAT 2023 Discuss everything thread
Snip >the eventual refuelling flypast obviously went belly up, given the distance between the KC-135 and the B-52 (must have been 2 miles?) so the whole thing was a bit anti climatic anyway. For the BUFF to have been airborne for so long and still seemingly fluff its lines was a shame. It's a might...

Re: RIAT 2023 Discuss everything thread
Did both days of the weekend this year (got a Sunday ticket as 'insurance' for a very miserable looking Saturday). Even though Saturday was great, I thought what the hell and went again. Loved the flying, big standout was the F-35 Harrier formation, didn't think I would ever see that. Biggest shame ...
