Biggest problem with solo Heli displays is that they often spend the majority of the display at crowd centre, which at bigger shows means only a small proportion of the crowd can actually see them.

Never stayed myself but surely the big attraction is you are almost on site so even on days you don't have an entrance ticket you've got nearly as good a view as those inside. Plus on days you do go inside it's a 30 second stroll to the gate.

I think there is a strong argument, that charging for hold luggage, pushed people into taking carry on instead, those people then realised how much easier it is to carry on, so, even if was free they'd still carry on.
