Re: Last TLP editions @ Florennes

My last overseas trip with 208 Squadron, was the last Buccaneer TLP at Florennes, in November/December 1993. I remember (and photgraphed) F-104S's, F-16's, Tornados, and Mirage 2000's. Co-incidently, the only aircraft type that had a 100% sortie rate, was the F-104's, although the weather played hav...

Re: Flat runways??

I remember being held on the taxiway, at the A15 end of Waddinton's runway, while two aircraft took-off. I wouldn't say it was a long time ago, but the 1st was a Vulcan, which was airborne well before it reached the hump in the runway. The 2nd was a TF104G Starfighter, (Danish), who was still going ...

Model Shops

Like many older scale modellers, I bemoan the seeming lack of the old style model shops on the High Street. Suprise, suprise, while trying to find a nearby shop, stocking the latest Airfix Re-releases (Vintage Classics), I stumbled upon ACCESS MODELS in Newark. On entering the shop, it was like step...

Re: How did you become a Aviation Enthusiast?

Like ExVulcanGC, my dad was in the RAF (for the 2nd time), having been ground crew with Bomber Command during WW2, eventually going to 2BFTS in Texas, for pilot training, just as the war was ending. After eventually gaining his wings, he flew, as a Sergeant Pilot, Avro Yorks on the middle and far ea...

Re: A-W Meteor NF.14 WS788 Restoration Project

the brakes aren't serviceable yet, we don't have a pneumatic system running yet, but as far as towing goes it's not our first rodeo! Also, it's not like she's going far, and the ground is pretty flat. Thanks for the info. It's just that I had a vision (nightmare) of a unmanned meatbox carreering ac...

Re: A-W Meteor NF.14 WS788 Restoration Project

Just a quick question. Are 788's wheel brakes servicable? Having been involved in towing operations of various aircraft, (Buccaneer & Nimrod), I know how much they can help (hinder) towing operations, especially preventing the embarassment of over running the tug on a downhill slope. If not, I h...

Re: Duxford Diary 2024

I remember, vaguely, visiting Overloon many times in the early 60's. (yes I am that old). My Dad was stationed at Laarbruch. I rememnber a Spitfire, but don't recall any obvious camera ports or blisters. We did take photos then, but I have no idea where they are, and we did shoot some 8mm cine films...

I sypathise with your leccie problems. Dealing with "electric string / spagetti" and wiggly amps was always a nightmare for me. I could understand why A was connected to B, but couldnt always understand why it had to be routed via the rest of the alphabet,(or so it seemed). To add to the &...

Re: Buccaneer XV168 Restoration Project

When I was on 208 at Lossiemouth, there was a wooden "W" shaped structure to rest the removed canopy on, while removing or refitting the "Bang" seats. It fitted over the spine, just in front of the twin aerials. Does the canopy still have the MDC initiators fitted about half way ...

"The tail stand is precautionary, in case the wind gets up while she is outside. With the extended nose off she's missing a bit of weight from the nose end, which we have counteracted to an extent by fitting the intakes. Another reason we chucked them on; more weight forward of her centre of g...

Is it just me, or do the Staggerwings have slightly differently shaped fin and rudders ? I suppose it could be just a trick of the angle they were photographed at.

Please note that the grey Tornado, with the RAF 100 tail markings is a GR.4. not a F.3. The undernose fairings, and the two RWR housings on the fin are the giveaway.

I've tried copying the original photo, through my computer camera, and loaded via flickr. It was more of a test experience, and if it's not acceptable, it can be removed. I've not used Fl...

According to the aviation safety network database, 82-0190 was the airframe destroyed on 17 September 1987. The cause was an explosion during fuelling / defuelling work while on the ground.

Those undercarriage bays looked familiar. If my memory serves me right, (it's 30 years since I last looked in one), there are the fatigue meters (checked after every flight), and the Master Armament Safety Plugs, in the starboard bay.
