Re: Duxford Diary 2024

I remember, vaguely, visiting Overloon many times in the early 60's. (yes I am that old). My Dad was stationed at Laarbruch. I rememnber a Spitfire, but don't recall any obvious camera ports or blisters. We did take photos then, but I have no idea where they are, and we did shoot some 8mm cine films...

Am I right in assuming the 2 Harvards/ T.6's are slightly different versions ? Look at the shape of their rudders.

I sypathise with your leccie problems. Dealing with "electric string / spagetti" and wiggly amps was always a nightmare for me. I could understand why A was connected to B, but couldnt always understand why it had to be routed via the rest of the alphabet,(or so it seemed). To add to the &...

Re: Buccaneer XV168 Restoration Project

When I was on 208 at Lossiemouth, there was a wooden "W" shaped structure to rest the removed canopy on, while removing or refitting the "Bang" seats. It fitted over the spine, just in front of the twin aerials. Does the canopy still have the MDC initiators fitted about half way ...

"The tail stand is precautionary, in case the wind gets up while she is outside. With the extended nose off she's missing a bit of weight from the nose end, which we have counteracted to an extent by fitting the intakes. Another reason we chucked them on; more weight forward of her centre of g...

Is it just me, or do the Staggerwings have slightly differently shaped fin and rudders ? I suppose it could be just a trick of the angle they were photographed at.

Please note that the grey Tornado, with the RAF 100 tail markings is a GR.4. not a F.3. The undernose fairings, and the two RWR housings on the fin are the giveaway.

Re: The End is Near: The Ultimate RAF Hercules Thread

https://flic.kr/p/2ouBxyV I apologise for the quality, but this is, as my previous post said is XV197 at Gander. I've tried copying the original photo, through my computer camera, and loaded via flickr. It was more of a test experience, and if it's not acceptable, it can be removed. I've not used Fl...

According to the aviation safety network database, 82-0190 was the airframe destroyed on 17 September 1987. The cause was an explosion during fuelling / defuelling work while on the ground.

I have a rather poor photo of XV197, taken at Gander, in 1986, (en-route Kinloss- Patrick AFB). Am unable to post as i don't use any compatible pic sharing sites.

Those undercarriage bays looked familiar. If my memory serves me right, (it's 30 years since I last looked in one), there are the fatigue meters (checked after every flight), and the Master Armament Safety Plugs, in the starboard bay.

Re: A-W Meteor NF.14 WS788 Restoration Project

Some times, the people who "work" at the museums are their own worst enemies. Many years ago, while visiting my local museum, I was admiring a Mk.14 Meteor on outdoor display, that had what clearly resembled ejection seat warning triangles painted on the fuselage sides. (I do have a pictur...

Brilliant photos.
Reminds of many happy weekends, helping (hindering), my Dad and others at the RAF Laarbruch gliding club in the early 60's. Don't rmember any aero tows, but have vivid memories of the winch vehicles, and all the verbal and physical signals given before and during the launch sequence.

I know this is a bit wide of the mark for this topic, but I'm catching up on some older reading material. On reading the article, in the October issue of "Britain at War", on your museum, I was amused to see the claim that the "poster child of the museum" ie. the Halifax, is taxi...

After leaving Downham Market, Norfolk, on 29 March 1943 for a raid on Berlin, the group's flight was designated "missing believed killed". The crash site was later located in Lake Markermeer and, in 2020, the remains were removed. [/quote] There is something wrong with this part of the new...

Looking on the internet (ABPIC's site) I think you've got the date wrong by a month.

According to that site the crash happened on the 3rd July 1977.

Hope this may help.
