Re: La Ferté-Alais 2020

I think Melun will go ahead in September. I'm more concerned about whether we'll be able to travel to France and back by then, without quarantine restrictions etc.

Where are you seeing price drops? I'm not really seeing it.

Thanks.

Re: Warbirds over Wanaka 2020

This is the worst case scenario for us as it's not (yet) enough for Insurance to kick in. We need the FCO to advise against 'all but essential travel' to New Zealand.

Anyone like to place bets on whether I'll be able to travel to New Zealand (via LAX) on 31/3?

Re: Warbird Workshop Yesterday TV

It's not so much picture "quality" it's more about definition. Yesterday is only an SD channel not HD which is basically the difference between DVD and Blu-ray! Yes and no... I don't have a problem with SD per se - a well created DVD can still look great. The problem is (presumably) the l...

I don't have many pilots and not sure of the exact balbo content...

Re: Warbird Workshop Yesterday TV

I enjoyed it. I'm pleased programmes like this get made.

Shame it is on such a low-def, low bit rate, fuzz-o-vision channel though... (at least on Sky anyway).

Re: UPDATED 07.02 - Flying Legends retrospective - *1997*

I have moved on to 1998. I don't have any personal recollections - you'll have to wait until 2002 for those so I have, again, been watching the official video. This is one from the 'Red Admiral Years' so leaves something to be desired on the production front, but let's brush over that... The French ...

An appearance could be tied in with the release of the 'American Warhorse' documentary if that is still on schedule for this summer? Perhaps Dan Friedkin's Mustangs could come back from where ever they have disappeared to.

(All pure speculation, btw...)

Fantastic! We're going in April, to many of the same places. We're particularly looking forward to the Doubtful Sound overnight cruise. Going for about 3 weeks with a long weekend at Warbirds over Wanaka in the middle. :-)

Hadn't noticed the C-17 had gone, that's a shame.

Still hoping for another piston warbird or two, tbh. Wouldn't they normally have some WWI stuff too?

Re: UPDATED 07.02 - Flying Legends retrospective - *1997*

Thanks.

Again, on the B-25 I will have picked up that designation from a Flying Legends programme. I have 2004 in front of me on the desk now and that's how it's listed there.

(I see on its current official web site:
https://kluhv.nl/home-eng/nieuws/de-vli ... -mitchell/
it is listed as both a B-25N and then at the bottom of the page a B-25J ... :dizzy: )

Mike, yes that's a fair point... However, interestingly not listed as a CAC-18 Mustang 22 in the original paper registration from May 1985: https://www.davebrenchleyphoto.co.uk/img/s/v-10/p3821159093-4.jpg When I started making participation lists my starting point was generally the Flying Legends p...

Re: UPDATED 07.02 - Flying Legends retrospective - *1997*

Great stuff, thanks Ben! I've updated the spreadsheet. Noticed I had missed off the P-47 all together, not sure how that happened! I believe the P-47 flew in the balbo, as there's a shot of it in the same vic as the Wildcat. If Stu Goldspink was in the Wildcat, obviously someone else flew the P-47 i...

Re: UPDATED 07.02 - Flying Legends retrospective - *1997*

Here is my best effort at the participation list for 1997. I don't have many pilots and I've got too many aircraft in the balbo. I'm guessing the balbo must have been different each day though. It's very difficult to determine which aircraft *didn't* take part in the balbo - Mustangs for example. Th...

Re: UPDATED 07.02 - Flying Legends retrospective - *1997*

Nice work Elliott. I certainly got the feeling from the video that it was somewhat low key compared to the previous couple of years. Was there something specific which kept the Europeans away, weather, regulation or something? I didn't pick up anything else that you've missed. OFMCs Yak 3 (G-BWOE) w...

Re: UPDATED 08.01 - Flying Legends retrospective - *1996*

I've started watching the 1997 video (and putting together the participants list) on the train this morning.

My first reaction is that the 3 ship of Hurricanes (with a 4th onsite from the BBMF) must have been a big deal in 1997.

I've been pretty down on this show for the last couple of years and after last year vowed to stop buying tickets in advance of a full flying list.

This is a decent start though and the Ultimate Fighters and the Historic Helicopters (which I haven't seen yet) count as star items for me.

Indeed, there were some monster lineups in the 90s! Looking back at these shows is kind of bittersweet for me, because I wasn't there. In retrospect there was no good reason for not being there - I was in Norfolk most summers through the 90s twiddling my thumbs and doing rubbish summer temp jobs. My...

I've updated 1996 in the original post above. Will hold off for Elliott's write up before launching into 1997. Now that we've covered off the back log, we should be able to keep it year to year as originally planned. No hurry though, I was never going to keep up with 2 per week anyway... I've alread...
