Re: Biggest regret in aviation enthusiasm?

Back in the 1950's the only 'communication' was by word of mouth. As schoolboys back then and living in close proximity to RAF Burtonwood ,we were blessed with large amounts of USAF activity, as this base was then the gateway into Europe. We would bike it to the fences, and watch the action at close q...

Re: What do you do with your piccies ??

Just spotted this thread--'what do you do with your piccies'--well,after 50 years of shooting anything that took to the air, when 20+ airshows a year was achievable ! I am asking myself that ! Having shot around 75,000 slides,then,--going digital over the last 15 years(20 HDD's worth) with more and ...

Re: Airshow almost made-its

Does anyone remember the 1993 Coningsby Open Day ? One of the highlights of the show was to have been the flypast by 16 Buccs that had been part of the Queen's Birthday formation. The cloud base dropped and you could hear, but not see, the formation a few miles out ,transiting back to Lossie !

Check out Manchester Transports service 100 from Shudehill,in the city centre, to Warrington--I think it runs hourly--it passes Barton's main gate--I think it's every hour.

Re: Greatest random sightings?.

Having been born in Warrington in 1945,I along with many school mates , were regular visitors in the mid 1950's to RAF Burtonwood to view the multitude of USAFE transport aircraft utilising this vast complex. But something quite different turned up in 1957--a deployment of B-36's ! a sight and sound ...

Sigma lens haze.

Over the last 30 years or so I have bought quite a fair number of new/second hand lenses, the majority being of Minolta/Sony manufacture.I also have 4 mid range Sigma telephoto zooms that all exhibit the same problem--if you shine a bright light source(ie LED) through the optical path, they all appear...

Re: Binocular advice?

If you are considering a second-hand pair of binos. check this site out. m‎ I spend a few days a week in a charity shop--and quite a few decent pairs pass through. One thing that you can check on any used pair is to shine a small led light source through either end of the lenses-- you can spot haze o...

Hi,Supercouse,
The number you are interested in is 79601. Even though there were massive crowds around the pier -head on Saturday, the waiting time for touring the Kulakov was only around 30 mins.

I recall back in the early '80s a couple of the SOTT gnats performed powered taxy runs(not fast) down the runway. With the Jags, I would assume that only qualified pilots would be entrusted to perform any kind 'live' taxy??
