Re: energy/utility bills - is a fixed tariff beneficial at present

The Ben Cruachan hydro power station near Oban is an example of good thinking; a reservoir high on the mountain feeds the turbines when demand is high and excess electricity at night is used to pump water back up the mountain. In the late 60s I had the chance to visit huge turbine hall cut into the ...

Re: energy/utility bills - is a fixed tariff beneficial at present

Browsing the BBC news today over a cup of tea: Nuclear power stations across Europe are running at below capacity because there’s insufficient water in rivers to cool them properly, and the French ones have a systematic corrosion problem. There’s no wind to turn the wind generators. Solar panels are...

Re: energy/utility bills - is a fixed tariff beneficial at present

Some of the figures we were quoting back at the start of the year do seem very optimistic now. I've decided I need to be a bit more proactive about monitoring our energy usage which will enable me to work out how to pay bills in the future. I have gone back into my Scottish Power account and downloa...

Re: Cosford changes

For Cole, and any others who wish to let the powers that be have their thoughts, the most ( possibly only) way is to write to the secretary of the trustees of whichever museum asking that your concerns are considered at a meeting. In my opinion the trustees of too many organisations sit there happil...

Re: The UKAR politics thread

Latest October price cap increase is now 81%!!!! The government have the power to stop this either by blocking the cap increase or even nationalising. But both of things are against Tory philosophy. We need action now. Sunak and Truss need to bury the hatchet and agree on a joint package regardless...

Re: Cosford changes

Good points TT. Beyond the need to become destinations I wonder how much corrosion is focussing thoughts on airframe disposal; I have read the reason Yeovilton had put the restored Phantom up for sale is the corrosion which needs treating. With regards to the Science Museum in London, I reckon you c...

Re: USAF museum visit advice please.

I have been on-line chatting with a former USAF Test pilot (bit of name dropping there🙄) who lives in Dayton who also said it was quite dark in places so I reckon a bit of practice before I go. I have got two full days there but have managed to arrange it for the same weekend as the annual USAF mara...

Re: F35B in the hover

I think that is the transition from hover to flight. The front nose wheel door is still open and I did notice at Fairford that the last door to close was the big one on top for the lift fan.

Don’t know about the F-35, not sure about the various RAF Harriers but think the Sea Harrier could hover with gear up.

USAF museum visit advice please.

6 weeks from now I’ll be at the USAF museum at Dayton (God and Aer Lingus willing). I have heard that the lighting is very low level and would like advice from anybody - either previous visitors or those experienced in low light photography. I hope to be allowed to take my monopod in. Currently use ...

Re: UKAR Fantasy Premier League

Liverpool to be champions. (Yes I am biased)

I suspect Leicester could be in danger of relegation; squad has been weakened already, they still rely too much on Vardy and the owners have financial problems as the core business (duty free) has been damaged by economic downturn.

Re: RIAT 2023 wish list

Tommy, you’re preaching to the converted on that one and I couldn’t agree more; maybe one of the “issues” is that many displays are seaside based and therefore a set piece would not have so much impact. Essentially we have only 2 airfield based shows now which would cater for such an extravaganza ra...

The Undeclared War on channel 4.
Hacking, deep fakes and a Tory government stealing an election -or not.

It’s also got Mark Rylance in who is always worth watching.

But those with savings, cash at least, are seeing those losing value. If the predictions are right cash savings will be worth about 11% less over the year 13% inflation off set by 2% interest.

Cosford changes

The rejigging at Cosford has already been covered.
I was there yesterday and a staff member said the experimental aircraft are starting to be moved in September and advised to visit soon if you want those them. He thought the TSR.2 and EAP were staying but wasn’t sure.(And plans change anyway.)

Re: The UKAR politics thread

I get the theory that raising interest rates helps reduce inflation by reducing people’s spending money and therefore demand; however I have always thought it a blunt instrument because it reduces money for companies to invest to improve productivity. However, that’s in more normal times. We’re in a...

It sure where you have heard of road closures this far awa from the show. The accommodation problem is two fold; first RIAT themselves need quite a few hotel rooms for crews, second that all the local accommodation makes the most of a lucrative weekend and hikes up the prices. Good old supply and de...
