Re: RIAT 2017 (Discussion & Participation Thread)
This is not me just be sycophantic but I thought the static layout this year was excellent. It was surely the best RIAT static display since 2012, or maybe even longer. I only hope some day we can get the loop back - the bit where the fighters were often parked in front of the trees.

Re: RIAT 2018 wishlist
It's a theme that immediately sounds thrilling but when considered could turn out to be fairly pedestrian. My hope is that air forces that have been particularly involved with the RAF make an appearance so we could maybe hope for Polish Migs/Sukhois, Czech Hinds/Hips, Slovakian Migs, Indian Sukhois,...

Re: RIAT 2018 discussion
Yeah I believe the plan is for three full show days next year.
I hope there's some variety over the three days like there used to be (and like there was this year!) How i'm going to get round the static and ground displays I have no idea...

Re: RAF Scampton Air Show 2017
I have only recently begun to get sceptical about Scampton - I bought tickets immediately they went on sale; basically in order to support a new and potentially exciting airshow. I still accept it may get very good at the last minute - but I am really starting to doubt this. As for commentators; I a...

Re: RAF Scampton Air Show 2017
Perhaps linking it to Shoreham was a bit tenuous, but it's pretty common knowledge that the F-104 had a high accident rate - that's probably what prompted the response. Yes but it's high accident rate had more to do with the type's inappropriate role designation than the aircraft itself. 'The Starf...

Re: RAF Scampton Air Show 2017
I spoke to some guys at RIAT about Scampton and mentioned to them that I was enthusiastic about the show despite some of the bad press they'd had. They seemed pretty exhausted and, frankly, a bit uninterested in Scampton. When I mentioned to them how much i'd love to see the Norwegian Starfighter th...

Re: Sitting centre of the crowd line
I am a FRIAT member every year and very often will go to the far western end to watch on the Sunday. There is always space at the front. If I wanted a view nearer the centre I have - on days when walking around the static - found spots reasonable close to the front slightly west or east of the FRIAT...

Re: Airshow first timer tips
Don't be disheartened by the busy crowdline - if you walk to the far western end (the left hand side of the crowd line) there is almost always space on the crowdline to watch and also plenty of space for your daughter to run around if she gets restless. It's a little bit more relaxed than the hectic...

I am massively excited about RIAT, but I won't hold my breath about the Ukrainians. Remember how excited we all got when the Romanians self confirmed?

Re: RIAT 2017 (Discussion & Participation Thread)
This weeks update is out of this world and if anyone else thinks otherwise needs to go and lock themselves in a dark room and hit themselves over the head with something hard. Erm, alright Ed but I don't fancy that I completely understand why others are extremely excited to see the A4 added, and co...

Re: Sea Vixen XP924 Thread
The danger that aircraft pose is so alarmingly small it is ridiculous. The only reason anyone makes a fuss about air accidents is because they are spectacular, in the true sense of the word. There are plenty of other horrendously dangerous things that go on every day with little regulation and no pu...

Re: RIAT 2017 (Discussion & Participation Thread)
I don't know where all this stuff about a really special aircraft being added has come from... but surely isn't it the U-2? I mean, I haven't missed an IAT in about two decades and I can't remember when I last saw a U-2.

if you've come to the last few years, factually it's very unlikely that you'll see anything this year that you haven't seen before (of course further additions can be made). MiG-15 it is, then.
It would be a fine addition!

It's great to see the static display nice and full this year and it's unquestionably a brilliant airshow - but I must admit I am yearning for at least one ex-soviet aircraft. I know they are getting harder and harder to find, but my hope remains for a Mig-29, Mi-24 or - maybe - my dream participant ...

Re: Pentax K30 + Sigma 50-500 metering issues
This sounds a little like my problem. Did you send off to the manufacturer or just take it to your dealer? Can I ask what lens you are using and, could I also see some of your results just to compare? (Perhaps I am hoping for too much!)

Re: Pentax K30 + Sigma 50-500 metering issues
That's really interesting; thanks Ikarus.
I am in half a mind to give up on this combination because I found Canon so much easier to use - but there are a few photos that have been exceptionally good and I am wondering if I will find better results with practice.
Have you ever used a K30?

Pentax K30 + Sigma 50-500 metering issues
Hi everyone, I traded in an old 40D and cheap Sigma 75-300 lens last year for the combination in the title and have found my results extraordinarily mixed. While some of my shots are extremely good, the vast majority are poor and - most annoyingly inconsistently exposed. I can be using an identical ...

Re: May Airshow
Was it just me..............or were the aircraft displaying further away this year ? I went to Dux for the May Airshow last year on the Tank Bank, and felt the new distance was a little further away....... but not too bad I then went to the September show where they closed the Tank Bank...............

Re: Sea Vixen XP924 Thread
This speculation is purely that - I *don't* know what i'm talking about... but from the photos and videos I am cautiously optimistic: the tanks seemed to slow the aircraft down to a relatively benign speed and the explosion didn't obviously damage anything. I am hopeful that the damage is minimal, d...

Re: May Airshow
I absolutely loved this weekend at Duxford. It is the first time in my memory that i've felt Duxford was a 'proper' airshow up with the likes of the old Mildenhall, RIAT, Yeovilton etc. I am biased as I am mainly interested in fast jets; but the variety of aircraft, brilliant quality of flying, inte...
