RAF Finningley 'At Home' 1961-1994

Once upon a time up until 1994 , at around this time of the year RAF Finningley hosted one of the largest and best air shows in the UK . For me and I am sure many more enthusiasts alike it provided a major source of photography with almost always a wide variety of aircraft both in the flying and the...

Re: Hawks in war-paint

In answer to tankbuster and stickshakers question regarding my slide to digital method , the simple answer is that I use a dedicated 35mm film scanner , namely a Konica Minolta Dimage IV . Unfortunately this has been out of production for some time now but there are other good makes available , but ...

Hawks in war-paint

I have always thought that the BAe Hawk was well suited to the RAFs standard green / grey camouflage which I hope these slides show . Almost all of these were shot on two excellent visits to 1TWU at RAF Brawdy in 1978 and 1982 when the first of the grey schemes were starting to appear . http://i230....

29Squadron Phantoms at Coningsby

It has been a while since I last posted any 'Golden Oldies' as I have been indulging in a mammoth slide scanning session as and when time has permitted between normal life . Several recent visits to Coningsby in recent months prompted me to dig out a few of 29Sdns. Phantoms as a pleasant change to t...

50 Shades of Grey.......Lightnings !

Probably the only aircraft in RAF service to have its apearance impoved , compared to its previous green /grey camouflage , the Lightning sported a variety of two & three tone grey schemes during its final years of service . I think this selection of Kodachrome slides speaks for itself . Just a ...

Linton on Ouse-1FTS Jet Provost T.3 & T.5s

To add a splash of colour to winter here is a small selection of Kodachrome images of Lintons J.P.s photographed in the 70s and 80s . They were mainly shot while passing on my way home from spending a usually quiet day photographing Tornadoes at nearby Leeming . How times change ! http://i230.photob...

Re: A-7 Corsairs at Waddington 1985

Thanks for your comments guys , and as for Arthur Tees log for 16th May 1985 , that was not too unusual for the time considering the milage . You could even photograph most of what you saw as well over those meter high fences . Those certainly were great days . Cheers , Fred .

A-7 Corsairs at Waddington 1985

Photographed at Waddington in May 1985 , this was one of the largest deployments of the A-7 to the UK . Here for 4 weeks gave plenty of opportunity to shoot them in reasonably good weather although by far the best day was departure day when only my son and myself were there to see them leave . The u...

3Squadron's Centenary visitors departures

I am a little bit late in putting these on as I have only just found time to edit them . As the early morning on Monday looked promising I decided to catch the Dutch and French weekend visitors departing after 3Sdns' 100th Anniversary celebrations . Although it was bitterly cold , windy , and rather...

Sadly missed by many , this is a selection of slides of the first UK based squdron to disband on this most versatile and cost effective mud mover used by the RAF . You can never have too many Lightning photographs , so as I have most of them scanned now , here's another selection of W.E.W. Petters masterpiece shot at my local during a couple of deployments here of the Binbrook Wing in 1973 & 1976 , plus a few visitors . All photographed using Praktica Nova...

I've not posted anything for the last month or two so here's the first of a double dose of two of the finest products from one of our great aircraft desigeners W.E.W Petter , but manufactured by two distinctly different companies . These scans are of 4FTS and CFS Gnats from RAF Valley plus of course...

Nothing wrong with the quality, these are over 40 years old and would look wrong if they were as sharp as today's photo's, perfect in my opinion! Keep them coming. That is a rather sweeping statement is'nt it .There were quality cameras, lenses and films , not to mention photographers , around long...

Thanks for posting these shots Rob .
