Re: US Marines flying off the QE...

The deck covering didn't really have an effect on the cat and trap conversion process . The QE Class is designed for but not with in relation to cat and trap however that statement is fairly loose and any conversion is not a simple process.

Re: US Marines flying off the QE...

Many of these guys are passionate about their years in the services and many of them are also aircraft enthusiasts. When we have these discussions at work or in the pub etc they are not talking from a standpoint of employment or job security etc they are just giving there honest opinion on the vario...

Re: US Marines flying off the QE...

No way to really support a Harrier force on the QE Class. At present the Carrier can support F35 and Merlin as standard. The Lynx variants, Chinook and Apache have also been given "consideration" in design. Operating an aircraft is a lot more than just landing and taking off and the engine...

Re: F-35C successfully traps on carrier for the first time

The comments made by the various Naval and industry professionals are not publicity and "towing the line" .Believe me when I say everyone who has been a part of the flight trials of the B and C variants are universally impressed by the aircrafts handling and capabilities - specifically in ...

Re: No F-35 for RIAT but maybe for Farnborough

The EMALS Catapults are well into development and testing it is a viable system that will be ready before 2030. I seem to remember the first launch of an F-35 C by the system was back in 2010-11 :)

Re: RIAT 2014 - Participation Thread

I think the Hawks range is roughly 2.5 times that of the F35, remember it is a lot heavier and a completely different beast to the Hawk. Plus the B variant F35 has reduced range due to smaller wings and the lift fan occupying the space that a fuel tank does on other variants.

Re: RIAT 2014 - Participation Thread

The transit time for the aircraft from the US to Fairford is approximately 9 hours with each aircraft having to refuel around 10 times.

This involves 2 tanker aircraft and the flight is further supported by a C17 Globemaster, C130 (Hercules) and around 100 support personnel.

Re: RIAT 2014 - Participation Thread

The plan is still very much for the 4 F-35s to attend and work is being done to ensure that the necessary safety checks are carried out on the aircraft due to make the trip as a matter of priority. Reading between the lines I would expect a Tuesday Arrival but dont hold me to that are make plans bas...

There is a very good possibility of a flypast at the Queen Elizabeth naming Ceremony, however there are a few logistical and security issues to resolve so it is not yet set in stone ! Heres hoping though :)

Re: RIAT 2014 - Participation Thread

Regarding the likes of the A400M and the US not yet appearing on the participation list is it possible that Farnborough have asked RIAT To hold off of confirming certain items until they are ready to release some more finalised lists ? Im sure these shows cooperate and I can maybe see why these show...

Re: RIAT 2014 - Participation Thread

I also thought it was something pressure related, I concluded it was either a pressure differential in its wake or perhaps some rebounding effect off of the ground as it was always as it was its lowest point about to pull into its climb.

Re: Dave (F-35) coming to the UK this summer

Sorry I was replying quickly and didn't specify enough context. My reply was only applicable to the issue of if the aircraft could perform hovering maneuvers at this summers airshows in the UK. What I was trying to say was if the aircraft performs its flying routine , brings itself to a hover then p...

Re: Dave (F-35) coming to the UK this summer

The damage comes from repeated usage in specific loadings. It should also be remembered that the damage is far more substantial when the aircraft performs a pure vertical take off from ground level, the act of bringing the aircraft into the hover from normal flight, then performing some standard air...

These photos are very good !

I competed in a Mixed Martial Arts Event Saturday evening would you or have you photographed one of these events ?

A far more comprehensive combat sport than boxing and would offer same very interesting photo opportunities

Great work

All of the campsites seem to have their fair share of idiots I suppose its just a law of averages but the problem at flyby does seem to unique to them ! To the Original poster, why dont you treat the day at totterdown as just a pure spectator day, meaning that you dont take all of your camera equipm...

Re: Is my plan realistic?

Depending on how much kit you are carrying you could ride a push bike from Kempsford to Totterdown ? I stay at Totterdown each year and on show days ride to and from the show, it is around a 30 minute ride at an average pace. The ride up does have a few inclines so depending on your bike, general le...

Re: UK ordering its first F-35 fighters

Inherent to the design is the ability to take any one of the ships out of service, place it into dry dock and begin the conversion process. It is still a large engineering task as the equipment required to achieve cat and trap is substantial in both quantity and size, just to physically get it onboa...
