Re: The People’s Mosquito

I haven't been aware of this project during the Summer months and the airshow season and I wondered if they have been present at any shows with a stall to attract interest and holding out their begging bowls. If not it would seem a considerable opportunity lost. What I find interesting with these p...

Re: Duxford September Airshow 2016- 10th and 11th September

Tim N - you have put your finger on it. They are volunteers. That means you take the rough with the smooth not that I can recollect an instance of bad communication with the public. Quite the reverse. So it is a problem it's one I have not been aware of. And I'm not sure why advance ticketing is a ...

Re: Duxford September Airshow 2016- 10th and 11th September

I imagine they charge for parking because you can use the free park and ride at Trumpington (although you still pay £2 to park there for the day). Motorbikes are free to park on the airfield (which is what I did) although bizarrely they took all the M11 traffic off at junction 11 and then on a ten ...

Re: Duxford September Airshow 2016- 10th and 11th September

In fairness to Duxford, when I've been on non-show days, the permanent catering concessions have always been pretty decent in terms of quality, although a little pricey. It's the grease wagons that roll up on show days that people have an issue with. Seemed to be a different company providing them ...

Re: Duxford September Airshow 2016- 10th and 11th September

I always take a picnic anyway so I can stay in the enclosure all day (I don't do the museum on show days) but have to add that since the permanent on site cafes (Wingco Joes etc) were franchised out their prices have leapt and whereas I used to support them on non show days (and get my discount) I ...

Re: Duxford September Airshow 2016- 10th and 11th September

Poor weather, would a present day fighter be all weather so not a problem. Not for a public display which must be flown VFR. Obviously it would have no problem transiting to the venue. I don't know what it is like a Duxford at the moment but here in Cambridge at 14:40 the WX has improved quite a bi...

Re: Duxford September Airshow 2016- 10th and 11th September

A coffee was three pounds and a sausage in a roll was six pounds! That will no doubt wind up a few people on here! I'm glad I took my own. Six quid for a Sausage Roll...!!! I know they have to make money, but that is just absolute daylight robbery. All I can think of is that Duxford must be chargin...

Re: Duxford September Airshow 2016- 10th and 11th September

I was there for a couple of hours this morning.

Several of the airshow mobile catering units were open. A coffee was three pounds and a sausage in a roll was six pounds! That will no doubt wind up a few people on here!

I'm glad I took my own.

Re: Duxford September Airshow 2016- 10th and 11th September

The days of Duxford allowing a potentially unlimited number of people to turn up, along with all the resulting chaos that brings, are over. How many times has that happened though ? Twice? Both are legacies of either the two Lancasters and/or an amazing BoB show - were there others?? Can't recall E...

Re: Duxford September Airshow 2016- 10th and 11th September

I predict that, if nothing else, this show will see the end of the parking charge, and quite possibly the last stand of the preposterous advance ticketing. It will also, I'm sure, lead to a drastic overhaul of personnel behind the scenes, and better consideration of themes for future events. It'll ...

Re: Problem Solving Duxford

There are going to be a lot of disappointed people this weekend when they realise the most contemporary fighter they have is from the 1950s... No there isn't. Just a handful of enthusiasts who put their own spin on the word contemporary. You got it right though, for Duxford 'modern contemporary fig...

Re: Problem Solving Duxford

Those are well made points, TF. And from an earlier point I haven't found it unfriendly, but for whatever reason it seems to attract rather a lot of rude, selfish and dim witted fence hoggers. Not sure how Duxford can be held responsible for the quality of their visitors! Old Warden doesn't suffer ...

Re: Idea for next year

After watching the jet provost display with the piston provost yesterday, I had an idea for an interesting display next year. How about two piston provosts (the collections one and the one that displayed at Little Gransden), two jet provosts and then two strikemasters? Maybe do a balbo/ formation f...

Re: Problem Solving Duxford

There is a saying in business that if you double your prices, providing you don't lose more than half your customers you will make more money and have to do less work! Obviously it is quite easy to overdo that and end up in a downward spiral if you get it wrong but do you not think Duxford are to so...

Re: Duxford September Airshow 2016- 10th and 11th September

But some of those “kids … using the museum as an adventure playground” might just be future aerospace engineers or Air Force personnel… so I can guess which demographic the RAF would rather invite through the doors of their museum… That highlights a much wider problem with society. I was taken to H...

Re: Shackleton WR963 - [Official Topic]

Oh do stop it. My concern is genuine. The press clearly read through forums! The Daily Mail quoted posts from Key verbatim. We are discussing a vintage aircraft being operated on a live airport by spirited but totally unqualified volunteers. It seems that all of this information has been divulged p...

Re: Duxford September Airshow 2016- 10th and 11th September

If you don't have children with you then the costs are comparable , and as much as I like Old Warden, Duxford certainly edges it for me. I have to travel quite a bit to get to either and there's no way I'd choose Old Warden over Duxford just to save a few pounds. Indeed I love Old Warden, it is a v...

Re: Duxford September Airshow 2016- 10th and 11th September

Comparing airshows with sport and theatre is plainly nonsense. Sorry but I totally disagree. The vast majority that attend airshow are people looking for an entertaining day out. Re: Duxford September Airshow 2016- 10th and 11th September

The more you read, the more it is glaringly obvious that Duxford as a venue IS saveable. The new "old" crowdline has apparently made the displays more viewer-friendly. The line-ups are respectable, if not great. What needs fixing is the "little" things. Bin this ridiculous parki...

Yes, you can almost feel the sense of self importance that comes from being the other side of the rope in a high vis jacket.

I best some of them spend all day at work going round with a clipboard achieving the square root of F all.

Can someone remind me how much Hendon is to get in as never been before Well if you are taking your car, £3 to £4 depending how long you are staying. Re: Duxford September Airshow 2016- 10th and 11th September
