Re: No more reprieve for Sentinel
A huge mistake. Not really. The capability will be replaced by satellites, drones and the US. I appreciate there are obvious risks; the links for drones can be jammed whereas the sentinel, as a manned platform, can change frequencies if it's being jammed. The airframe size was always going to hinde...

Re: RAF Scampton Air Show 2017
You're telling me you genuinely can't establish the difference between an RAF airshow, and a civilian one? Yes - as it turns out - my statement re: 'never at Scampton' was wrong. But only because I had no idea what a bunch of civilians and charity workers were doing. I am speaking from an active mil...

Come on Chris, let sleeping dogs lie and all that stuff. No need to provoke someone please. Oh I just wondered if s/he would bite. You're right of course, it's very petty I'll stop now I'm still here. However, this 'airshow' has no link to RAF Waddington, or the RAF at all really, and so I have not...

Re: RAF Scampton Air Show 2017?
I appreciate that sometimes people are in the know but have their hands tied by those in much higher places and are therefore unable to spill the beans exactly on the nail, there is a very detailed plan, but the RAF hold the decision, which we will all have to wait for. It's amazing really. I tell ...

Just to be clear, the definition of 'snob' is as follows: A person with an exaggerated respect for high social position or wealth who seeks to associate with social superiors and looks down on those regarded as socially inferior: That is but one definition. The simple definition of snobbery, via Me...

Looking forward to the return! On another note, why would anyone care when you go to the toilet? Surely this particular brand of snobbery can be kept to oneself? It's not unheard of for pilots of display aircraft to have a browse of these forum's and it just isn't necessary to publicly state that y...

Re: So, should they have scrapped Nimrod?
I would suggest that military experience is not necessary for all aspects of selecting new aircraft or indeed modifying old ones. Certainly in terms of operational requirements they might be but in terms of overall certification then perhaps not. Military experience is no use when carrying out stal...

Re: So, should they have scrapped Nimrod?
I think the experts here that have no military or MOD background have finally solved what the best solution would have been. 6 engines. So 2 can be shut down to conserve fuel which leaves the safety of 4. If any fail then there is the option to either return on 3, or start number 5 or 6. Since ther...

Re: So, should they have scrapped Nimrod?
Personally, I think you do need 4 engines for maritime patrol. Take this scenario. Tracking a sub out over the north sea and you get an engine failure. Realistically, a twin will have to return to base immediately, giving time for the enemy to escape while the replacement aircraft is en route. A 4 ...

Re: So, should they have scrapped Nimrod?
Ericbee1213 is right, and by implication and hard though it might be to grasp, you're wrong. Twice as many engines means they're twice as likely to fail. Especially if you put them close together...... I was specifically referring to the part where he said 'if 4 engines are safer than 2, then it's ...
