Re: “Your Questions Answered” - Head of Air Operations

With the new flag system, which flag number is the limit for Friday viewing?

Re: RIAT 2024 - discuss most things thread

Since Peter took over as head of Air Ops they have been very transparent regarding what nations they expect to be able to announce in future updates. Last year saw them comment on Italians a few times before the updates if I recall. They also mentioned about JHC a few times this year before announc...

Re: RIAT 2024 wishlist.

If there's a NATO flypast on Friday as has been mooted, I'd be surprised if a LH bird wasn't part of it given their significance to the organisation.

As this is the wishlist, I'll add my annual U2 request, a couple of USMC Harriers and a B1.

Another vote for 2022 conditions from me!
Bit early to start a weather thread with four weeks still to go, but the long range forecasts from various sources is for no dominant conditions slightly above temperature norms.

As for 2022, definitely prefer that to last year, especially Friday.

Re: RIAT 2024 - discuss most things thread

How often do the Thursday Updates comment on future announcements? Not often, yet they did for the US. Suspect they knew then they'd be formally announced last minute dot com. To be honest, the USA aircraft will just be the cherry on top of a very tasty cake.

Re: RIAT 2024 - discuss most things thread

Having seen the Saudi Hawks fly on Friday last year in weather that can only be described as biblical, I'm pleased to see them back, hopefully to fly in weather more akin to what they're used to. As for the F15, I hope it's the green special but won't turn my nose up to either. Also hope the F15 com...

It wouldn't be that bad if that was the spacing between formations. In reality there will be 30 seconds or so and it'll look a bit sparse.

Re: A Day at the Sidewinder Low Level (Photo Heavy)

The first F-35C shot with the light background is the standout for me but there's a few trophy shots there. Looks like you had a productive day and picked a good spot. I've blanked in the sidewinder before so the aviation gods were on your side, especially with the Nellis F35.

Re: RIAT 2024 wishlist.

1. I think if the Hurjet attends it would most likely only fly on Friday, to show itself to potential customers just like the C-390 or AW139. Most arms deals are also signed on the Friday. If the Hürjet attends, it will definitely be there on the Friday for the reason mentioned although there's no ...

Re: RIAT 2024 - discuss most things thread

Regarding low drag, sort of. Imagine a space rocket going vertically up - low drag. Now angle it at 20 degrees to the airflow - is it still low drag? Yes. Almost, have another go. And as you'll remember from my own quote, you could achieve the same "look how little difference it makes!" b...

No, I'd say it'd be pretty pointless and worth about as much as none. Might as well just be on static and get it on the Monday.
Best cancel the B-1 / B-52 / U2 / Beluga displays then.

Re: RIAT 2024 - discuss most things thread

On paper, an A2A loadout will have minimal effect on a display performance. While they're not featherweight missiles, by definition aerodynamically they're extremely low drag and high-g, so they shouldn't effect what the aircraft can do very much at all, bar a weight penalty (which could be equally...

It will be fascinating to compare the 2 F-15 displays - clean and loaded - to see if there is any discernible difference; from what everyone's saying there won't be.
If you watch the online video of the St Louis display the clean jet has a higher pitch rate which is about what you'd expect.

Re: RIAT 2024 - discuss most things thread

Agree with the comments. Very, very nice. This year's tattoo is looking like an absolute classic. Numerous artistically good special schemes (and a few so so); an impressive F-16 line including several rare nations; a debut factory demo from an advanced fighter; plenty of afterburner action; classic...

Re: RIAT 2024 wishlist.

Also Turkish Aerospace Hürjet will be flying at Farnborough. Not on my wishlist so much, but I wonder if anyone else would appreciate seeing it? Me for one. It'd be another new type to tick off. Also at Farnborough will be a flying KC-390. IMO a nice looking heavy which would provide a bit of contr...

Re: RIAT 2024 - discuss most things thread

The tooled up F15 looks the business and the rapid pitch manoeuvres should fluff up nicely in the damp Fairford sky. Looks like they're executed from quite low altitude too meaning there's going to be some great photo opportunities.

Do you do that for all fighters and transports then? So a KC-10 is just like a Hercules or a B-52 becomes a Strike Eagle. Interesting.
Nope, but if you squint at the F35A, it can become an F22. :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

Maybe a bit too late for this year, but the German Air Force A350 looks classy. Having had the A340 attend before, it be nice to see it's successor in the static park.
If you squint at the A319 that's coming, it looks just like their A350. Similar livery, fewer windows.

Nice routine. Not convinced about the livery. Would be nice if the Herc was part of the RIAT routine but not expecting it.

Re: “Your Questions Answered” - Head of Air Operations

Without going into specific instances, what are some of the reasons an ongoing country fails to attend? Much effort must be expended on both sides for something to not materialise. I can't be the only one who makes a prayer and does a 'rain dance' when they see a juicy nation - perhaps rain dance wa...

With Farnborough providing one RIAT participant (TBC), could there be any other dividends? Perhaps a Lockheed Martin demo using a LH jet?
