Re: Where has XH558 thread gone?

If only I'd been online this morning I could have made a spoof announcement that the hangar funding has been found. Now that would have been an even bigger April fool than a ferry flight to Bruntingthorpe.

Re: Where has XH558 thread gone?

Again thanks for the response XR219, considering the hostile audience here, it's appreciated that someone from the VttST posts. While I agree getting 558 under cover is clearly the most important thing, I don't see why it needs to be mutually exclusive to organising fast taxiing. In fact I think a p...

Re: Where has XH558 thread gone?

Thanks for your response XR219. It would be nice to think VttST are aiming to fast taxi this year. Even if that proves impossible, stating that a public fast taxi is the AIM this year would give people something to look forward to. I'm sure many people are beginning to think it's never going to happ...

Re: Where has XH558 thread gone?

XR219, why do you think building the hangar is a prerequisite for fast taxing? Surely 558 is perfectly cabable of doing so safely now all that is needed is to convince the airport. It would go a long way to silence critics, help with funding and generally raise 558's profile to fast taxi this year -...

Re: Where has XH558 thread gone?

Returning a VC10 to flight paticularly an MR4 which had far few modifications than ZA150 is more down to money. Remember these jets were on the civil register rather than being military types, so in theory you could even return them to passenger service if there was enough money. However it would st...

Re: Where has XH558 thread gone?

From what I understand the US regulations are easier to comply with than UK but OEM support is still needed. There is some good information on this explained by the group who operates the Sea Harrier which makes interesting reading. I think flying a Vulcan in the US would also now be impossible due ...

Re: Where has XH558 thread gone?

I'm a little curious for all those who believe in this happening - what return on investment is an investor likely to get? A new build hangar they then can't use because its full of someone else's V-bomber, which by all accounts couldn't pay its way in one that was already standing. I don't think a...

Re: Where has XH558 thread gone?

If 558 gets a purpose built hangar and enough people visit to pay back the rent for the next 80 years I'd be very happy to run naked anywhere Mr Pleming requests! Ive long since given up hope of seeing 558 taxi again, but if we can still have a working Vulcan capable of running her engines for futur...

Re: Where has XH558 thread gone?

While a road move might not make much economic sense if the best you could hope for is a bent airframe that could maybe limp up the runway. However, if we are to believe 558 is a special Vulcan that can pay it's rent on a new £3 million hanger, surely it would be worth keeping her as a running examp...

Re: Where has XH558 thread gone?

Thanks for the sooty655. May I ask, is moving 655 by road transport something 655Maps has ever looked into seriously, with the trouble at Wellesbourne? I think to disassemble, move and assemble something that could move slowly under her own power would be possible but very expensive. The frustration...

Re: Where has XH558 thread gone?

On the subject of taxi runs. Didn't someone win a competition for a taxi run with Martin Withers, it was part of a big fund raising lottery back in 2015 I think? I presume the lucky winner is still waiting. To run a lottery where the prize cannot be delivered bears on the fraudulent I'd say.

Re: Where has XH558 thread gone?

That's a depressing summary Donald. I naively thought the intension was to fast taxi, and the problem was just utter incompetence that nobody thought to check with Robin Hood it was going to be allowed, before stranding 558 there. Even if taxi runs were going to be possible, it would been a poor com...

Re: Where has XH558 thread gone?

When did 426 last use Southend's main runway? I'd wager it was over a decade ago. Especially for a fast run. Dan, 426 did a slow speed taxi along the main runway on 3rd Dec 2017, engaging full power and making a howl briefly. (Amazing what can be achieved even without a bunch of salaried employees)...

Re: Where has XH558 thread gone?

Who would like to predict 558's future as far as 2037? I think anyone with any common sense will know Etna is a pipe dream that will never happen. I don't see any reason why 558 will never taxi run on the main runway - afterall 426 has been allowed to at Southend recently. Will the hangar ever be bu...

I can assure you the names plaques are made from high-quality 3M 'aircraft grade' vinyl, the same type used on commercial jets often flying in minus 30 celcius temperatures above 30,000 feet. The whole idea of them falling off and being put back on by screws with washers is just ludicrous and you w...

Re: Where has XH558 thread gone?

Thought the Nuneaton offices took care of this, Why are they renting so many offices around the uk. You also have the rental for the main stores to consider also. Nah, shiny as in gloss coat, sunshine, no mould or greenery.... A bit premature for that that MLC, she's not been out that long yet. Give it a couple more years of outdoor storage and you should be getting some noticeable corrosion - jet pipe end cans usually suffer badly. I would imagine despite t...
