Great shot!
Forgive my ignorance - but I thought The Flying Scotsman wore the number 4472?
Are there two? If so - which one is the REAL one?
Thanks,
Arthur

Re: Long Marston Air Display - 1981
Wow that's a great find. So many classic aircraft visiting the airfield for the first of two Vintage Air Displays. Thanks for the time taken. Really appreciate it. I wonder if that Vulcan still exists and just who where The Dollops! I can help with the Vulcan - of which only the nose/cockpit sectio...

Re: Wellesbourne Mountford's future
Yep, a blatant and disgraceful disregard for this country's heritage, as per usual... Hey never mind 'heritage', it's profit, profit , PROFIT that counts (and nothing else). Meanwhile I remember they used to ferry-fly the old BA VC-10's, which had been stored outside in the elements for years, from...

Re: Long Marston Air Display - 1981
Shakespeare, Here's the poster for the 1980 event. http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t307/Anorak659/Long%20Marston_zpsiqfho9fs.jpg I noted that the Vulcan was XM652 of 44 Squadron and the Nimrod was XV242. Other aircraft noted were: Dragon Rapide Z7528 (G-AHGD) Mew Gull G-AEXF Spitfire MH434 Nord 1...

Re: Wellesbourne Mountford's future
Gaydon would not be an option its owned by Land Rover and is a testing ground. Getting 655 off Wellesbourne's runway is possible but obviously out of the question so it would be down to either transport off site to rebuild to static somewhere or leave site in the skip. Knowing a bit about the famil...

Should the Vulcan be saved, a logical place to display it would be Gaydon - just a few miles up the road...

Re: Wellesbourne Mountford's future
@106500 - and if they have an emergency requiring a take off abandon just as they get to V1? With 10m of runway remaining? I would love to see the responses you got from current/ recent Vulcan pilots if you invited them to try and take off from WM in a 50 yo Vulcan! Just need a larger brake chute a...

Re: Wellesbourne Mountford's future
Perhaps as the aircraft is live one ferry flight somewhere out of there could happen, anywhere but the UK it wouldnt be a issue, but I wont hold my breath Not a chance of getting out of Wellesbourne by air - 917m - unless reheat is fitted! Hopefully South Warwickshire planning will look at the bigg...

That side-on photo of the Invader clearly shows the 'dodgy' starboard undercarriage - the wheel should be on the outside of the leg!
Thanks for posting the photos - I'll get some more air show information to you shortly.

Re: Aircraft number designation?
This kind of thread is why I love this forum! You're welcome. At least it's not confusing though eh? How come we go backwards sometimes too? B-17 from WW2 to the B-1, B-2? Where does the B-52 designation come from by the way? Was it done differently during WW2 (apart from not having the tri-forces ...

Yes - but not without a significant ground force presence also. This would be needed to force IS into the western deserts of Iraq where they can be despatched to meet their makers wiithout much collateral loss of life and the prying eyes of the media to complicate issues...

Intersting point about MFF being scrapped because of the limits of CFE - whilst I know of the premise I don't know whether it was ever considered a success - is this something that could be re introduced in the RAF at some point if we're lacking numbers of fighter aircraft - with JTIDs does the con...

Good shot! It's nice to see Tiger Moth G-ALWW in the background. This was based at Long Marston and used as a tug by the gliding club. It's not ventured far - it no resides at Bickmarsh (Bidford-on-Avon)

Re: Long Marston Air Display - 1981
Found this passage last night from the book ‘Angry Skies Over The Vale’ by Brian Kedward. An excellent book outlining the history of both Long Marston and Honeybourne Airfields during the war years. “Another aviation highlight at the airfield was the air display held in the early 1980s, with a vari...

I take it from your comment that the A26 doesn't exist now after its crash at Biggen Hill! Totally written-off - with the loss of seven lives (all onboard). Apparently the pilots seat came loose during a roll (which was executed so that the aircraft utilized the valley beyond the airfield) - the ai...

Re: Long Marston Air Display - 1981
Shakespeare, I think it may have been the year before (1980) - because a school friend had a flight in it by way of reward for camping out and guarding it for about 6 weeks, this being from Coventry Airshow to Mildenhall (the Air Fete being in the August of that year). The wheel that fell off was on...

Excellent news!
I was fortunate enough to see RR299 perform a low-level barrel roll (whilst passing another airfield enroute to its' Hawarden base) many years ago - it was fantastic!
Would I want to see it do that again? Most definitely NOT!

Nice shots Ian - particularly like the 32 Squadron machine.
However, I do have a bit of a soft spot for XX406 - which was the first Gazelle I flew in at Shawbury back in 1989!
