Re: RIAT 2023 Discuss everything thread

Riat more than two weeks ago now but I just wanted to say how great it was. I thought the solo fast jet displays were particularly excellent, uniformly brilliant. The pick of an outstanding bunch had to be the Rafale. The Finnish F-18 as ever was extraordinary and I thought the Italian Typhoon gave...

Re: Dayton Air Show

A great follow-up set Sean, really enjoyed looking through these too. The VAW-121 E-2 tail is a nice addition. Very nice to see the Canadian Aurora too. Pick of the shots for me is the fantastically melodramatic Mig with pyros. All in all, this looked like a great show and your two sets of pictures ...

Re: RIAT 2024 wishlist.

1998 saw the 50th anniversary of the Berlin Airlift and RIAT put on a bit of a set-piece about that. So no reason why next year's D-Day anniversary couldn't be a theme. How many of the Daks planning to come over again next summer (like 2019) will still be around come RIAT weekend is anyone's guess. ...

Re: FRIAT Commentary

Lol. As a safety critical worker, my sense of hearing is important to me so I wear ear protection anyway. Having the commentary or not matters little to me. If there's an emergency, I'll just follow the stampede (it's aviation fans, that's exactly what it will be) with my despairing arms in the air....

Re: Dayton Air Show

What a lovely set, interesting stuff. Loved the low down F-35 static shot. And nice to see the 'JZs' too. I am so pleased that the VFA-122 CAG is still the favoured mount for the demo team - she was in the strip down bay at Lemoore back in March and I wondered if it was something 'terminal' for that...

Re: RIAT 2024 wishlist.

Around the grounds - Early Bird parking for P&V East. 2022 and 2023 have been a real bun-fight and no need for it. Simple food for P&V East arrivals. Headsets for those that want FRIAT commentary in the grandstand. Flying - A nice finale set-piece - built around the F-16s maybe? Blue Impulse...

A great set there - a variety of photography styles capturing the atmosphere and narrative of the event. Including members of the crowd in your work adds a lot of context. Enjoyed this set.

Re: FRIAT Commentary

Perhaps RIAT could investigate the radio earpieces that they use at the cricket so that those in the ground can hear the Sky commentators. I would suggest they would only be deployed in FRIAT, then each individual can chose whether to listen to Ben et al, or not . Obviously any over-riding safety a...

Re: FRIAT 2024

Yep, a full grandstand is no fun. I'm seriously thinking about taking a chair next year. If you've got people even one or two seats next to you, inevitably they are going to obstruct the view etc, especially us long lens types. The person sat next to you leans out to see around the person next to th...

Re: Security

What are the checks like for the main show days? For arrivals, all it's been is poke round the camera bag, examine my sandwiches and bid me good day. No wand... no pat down... no bags through scanners. Maybe this is just how it is for arrivals and main show days will be different. Not complaining at...

Re: Weather watch 23

I decided to stay in my accommodation today in Witney today due to the forecast. Been constant steady rain since about 0600 here and sat back with a cup of tea watching the tennis No end to the rain in sight here. In the distance, I have heard jet noise and it isn't from Brize. So some stuff has bee...

Re: RIAT 2023 Discuss everything thread

I guess we are at that stage now there is no real need to worry. We can't change anything, so let's look forward to a safe, successful show. The weather will do what it will. On the other hand, even though I can't change it or influence it, I do have mild concerns about protestors. But that is cover...

Re: Security

Regardless of whether or not it's a televised event, it will quickly become a mass-maintstream-media interest event if there are sustained runway incursions throughout a display day - god forbid a moron disrupts the arrivals days by gluing themselves to the piano keys. I want to see Phantoms in the ...

Re: RIAT 2023 Stars, in *your* eyes

Was lucky enough to have been in Italy for the show at Practica, but nice to see many of them again at Fairford - an incredible support for the show from them. Lovely to see a flying Harrier in the show again. Currently for me, Al Fursan is my highlight as I have never seen them before. The overall ...

I didn't get the ZZ either last week. Never mind. I saw the King in it's new clothing, so fair do.

Anyway, I thought we 'all' wanted the BBMF disbanded to save on hard earned tax pounds.... ;-)

Happy for anyone to visit me and preach about when and where to go around the world in order to watch various aircraft. Also to discuss grammar.

Nice update. Especially pleasing (for me) is the Aurora... Lovely airframe, enjoyable noises and a helping of smoke on the approach. I had a terrible camera the last time I saw the Saudi Hawks (Waddo last decade some time), so will be interested to see what has become of them and their display. Thes...

Re: The F-35 Debate - Love it or Loath it?

It's an airframe crying out for a bit of colour. The Danish with their red roundels really makes a difference to the 'A' when watching them at Luke AFB. The special Norwegian tail (no. 5146 - HobbyMaster releasing the model later this year) is also worthy of a catch. The 'A' generally leaves me a li...

Yeah, the old 'I'm alright Jack' whataboutism.

People wishing for an A-10, or a Super Bug... yeah... just cough up and go to Germany next month. Easy innit.

If you can get to these places affordably and without risking divorce or going hungry, do it. If you can't, wish for it here. It's all good.
