Re: Cuban Air Force

If you get to Havana, check out the Museum of the Revolution, it has a couple of whole aircraft (Sea Fury plus a Vought O2SU-3) and bits of a few more (U-2 and an A-26). My Spanish is limited, I'm able to order a couple of beers and that's about it, but when I visited the now empty Air Force Museum,...

Re: Cuban Air Force

Having been to Cuba a few times I've never seen anything military. There was an air force museum in Havana but the site was cleared a few years ago. There were also a few aircraft "preserved" near the control tower at Havana's Jose Marti airport, Il-62, AN-24, IL-18 and a DC-3, but last ti...

RW 27 at Boston is 7,000 ft, and no problem for a 747! (having 16 brakes has it's uses!)

Re: Why No Talk From the Pilots On My Scanner?

The clue is in the name - "scanner". It scans frequencies looking for transmissions, so you may miss ones you want to hear as they are blocked by other transmissions on other frequencies. If you have a radio, as opposed to a scanner, you tune it to a single frequency and you shouldn't miss...

Have a look here: m and here: m Spot 10 is worth a visit early morning, you can see what's in from up there. Most stuff at Nellis deploys there to use the ranges, you don't get too many visitors popping in. To get a feel for what's there, have a look here: m You may get a few other clues here: m so ...

Re: 747-800 & a few others @ Hong Kong

2. Cathay B747-800

It's a 747-8. The -800 never got past the drawing board, it should really be the 747-900! However Boeing called it the 747-8, because it uses a lot of 787 technology.

Re: 9/11 - The Lost Tapes

What you have to remember is that this was the first time that the world had seen suicide hijackings. Up to this point the policy for dealing with hijackings was to engage with the hijackers to try and secure a peaceful outcome. With hindsight we know that was not an option, but who knew that on the...

Re: N1954H at Narsarsuaq

According to the FAA it's a Hawker T20!

http://registry.faa.gov/aircraftinquiry ... rtxt=1954H

A quick Google produced this:

http://www.airport-data.com/aircraft/photo/719293.html

which looks like a Sea Fury. So that'll be a Sea Fury T20!

Would appear it's heading to the Czech Republic:

Re: Snow covered wing

All that's allowed on the 747 is a thin layer of hoarfrost on the upper fuselage, provided all vents and ports are clear, that's thin enough to be able to read writing through, and a light coating of frost under the wings due to cold fuel. Everything else must be clear of snow, ice and frost. From t...

Re: Snow covered wing

You're not listening. It is prohibited to take off with any ice or snow on the aircraft. If you taxi out and it snows, you go back and de-ice again. If it keeps doing it you keep de-icing or go home. You do NOT take off with snow on the wings. The amount of snow you are allowed on the wings for take...

Re: Snow covered wing

Could have been a heavy shower just before taxi In which case you go back and de-ice again. I strongly suspect that every airline in this country (and probably the world) has it written in their Ops Manual that it is forbidden to take off with any accumulations of ice or snow on their aircraft. To ...
