Re: Edwards AFB Airshow 2022

Yes, what Roger_Over said! And we couldn't have been more than 10 yards from you, as we were on the fenceline just behind the F-18 tailplane!

Off to Point Mugu, then Santa Monica before going to Sofi Stadium this evening to watch the Chargers vs Broncos NFL game, then home tomorrow!

Re: Edwards AFB Airshow 2022

We (my son and I) did Edwards Saturday, and Santa Maria Sunday. Enjoyed both, but Edwards perhaps didn't quite live up to the high expectations we had, and Santa Maria exceeded expectations and if anything was the more enjoyable show. SM weather was overcast until early-afternoon when it suddenly cl...

EU261 still applies to flights from/to the UK - the legislation was transposed into UK law as part of Brexit.

I was also at Yuma 2019 and were told by the US Military personnel stewarding the entry lines that Brits didn't need to have our details recorded - only the non-Brit "foreigners" needed to line up and sign in!

Re: The rarest Western military type to visit the UK

Imperial Iranian Navy Orion 5-8706 (beautiful three-tone blue camo) which visited Lyneham on the evening of Sunday 24 July 1977! It's a western type, but not really from a western air arm, so I know it doesn't count based based on the OP's question. But it's still the star item in my logbooks over t...

Agreed, re it being a monitoring exercise. And I would add that if you are going to check every car has a pass, you have to have a plan for what to do with those that turn up without a pass.

Re: RIAT 2022 Discussion Thread

When did the F86 depart? Didn’t see it today. Sore point :( They had switched from 09 to 27, so I sat at P&V West for ages waiting for it, only to see it join at the northern intersection and take off on 09. I am guessing about 2pm. I had similar disappointment sat in FRIAT, watching the Sea St...

Re: RIAT 2022 Discussion Thread

What do the RAF have against us seeing the F-35? Do they not trust us or something? We’re not even allowed to see an RAF one on Static. I seem to think it’s the MoD. I wonder if there is something very specific about the F-35B rear-end that is still a bit "sensitive", perhaps to do with t...

Because we the taxpayers are paying for it, and the Canadians put in the cheapest compliant bid.

And with the height they jump from, the vast majority of those watching wouldn't know it was Canadian.

Re: Weather watch '22

Remember, the forecast temps are in the shade, and we will be out in the sun. And the mass of concrete causes a micro-climate so that on an airfield it will always be a few degrees warmer than the local area forecast.

Hence I expect it to "feel like" considerably more than 28C.

Re: RIAT 2022 Discussion Thread

My aircraft tastes are fairly cosmopolitan, and like others I too like trainers and helicopters in the mix. And I have been known to enjoy a day at the fence at Valley, and in the past, dare I say it, Linton-on-Ouse to watch and log Tucanos!

So Andyph certainly doesn't speak for me.

Re: Orange-Caritat Spotting

Scramble's airfield guide reports good open access to a number of locations around the base with good opportunities for both photography and spotting, including at least one location where a three-step ladder is recommended. There is no mention of "difficulties" with the local authorities.

Images of the RAF’s Wedgetails (sans any kit) starting to emerge: Interesting that it’s new build. I thought I had read something along the lines of using existing unsold 737 ‘frames to save costs. I guess after the 737 debacle of a couple of years ago "new build" and "existing unsol...

Re: NFL Superbowl Flyby Predictions

Well, even the BBC showed only 3 seconds. What did you expect? The Beeb (along with Sky) could only broadcast what the US host broadcaster (NBC) chose to show. And the flight would have been overhead the stadium for only a couple of seconds timed precisely to arrive at the end of the National Anthem.

Ok, thanks, I wasn't aware of the YAM aircraft's fate. Reinforces Orion's comment about the big task of preserving these airframes.

Re: RAF BAE146 to SWAM & Duxford

How many Heralds are left, and are any preserved indoors? The task of conserving an airframe that big seems to me to be a huge one. See http://www.oldprops.ukhome.net/Herald%20Photographs.htm for a full list, all-be-it rather dated. There are three other intact Heralds in UK museums, at the Museum ...
