Who's that bird?

Knowing that there are some keen and knowing birders on here, could I ask what this is? I spotted it whilst at Bedfont Football club yesterday as I was photographing the Heathrow arrivals. I think it may be a Stonechat, but ornithology is not my specialist area. Many thanks, Ralph https://farm5.stat...

Re: Prestwick US air ops.

Yup - A friend and I had a "Self-Guided Tour" round that hangar in 1973, if I remember correctly there were about 20 of them being refurbished for sale to Norway.
Those were the days!

Re: RAF100

CJS wrote Seriously?? It doesn't say 'we have a dedicated RAF airfield in Gibraltar' does it?! Perhaps check your facts before RAF mud slinging just for the sake of it... I did check my facts and, as far as I am aware, there is no "RAF Gilbraltar " but there is RAF Gibraltar - I have been ...

Re: RAF100

That map is a pile of fetid dingo's kidneys. It seems we have an airfield in Gilbraltar.
To be fair, both Gan and Mount Pleasant are there - you just need to adjust the date sliders to reveal them.

Excellent set - many thanks! My wife and I were married in Gib in 1999 and go back as often as we can - you have certainly captured the history of the place perfectly. Can't wait for our next visit in 2019 for our 20th anniversary :-)

Re: Northolt Night Photoshoot XXIV Thursday 22nd March 2018

Agreed about the aircraft outlines - a bit tacky. As for the design I suggested, this was kept simple (and hopefully classy) to enable sales at events other than the night-shoots (such as Families Days etc) - whether to go with that or with a specific night-shoot design would depend on projected pro...

The weather was not good and the boat from Mull to Lunga did provide a dynamic experience - but nobody was ill (there were approx. 18 people on this trip). Some pics to give an idea of the boat and conditions... https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4611/39583318751_62308d6363_h.jpg AA_IMG_7883_S by Ralph ...

Puffin Patrol

Highlight of my non-aviation photography in 2017 was a trip out to the Isle of Lunga to photograph the Puffin colony there. The birds are so incredibly tame and comical to watch. The weather was absolutely pants but luckily I had a spare rain cover for my kit left over from RIAT 2008 https://farm5.s...

Re: Your Favourite Image From 2017

With the subject matter of two of my highlights of 2017 already taken (the Fairford Flankers and CVN-77) I guess that another event that I enjoyed was the Gazelle Gathering at Middle Wallop. Although the positioning of the public area left a lot to be desired as regards the light, I was happy with t...

Another one bites the dust....

The writing was on the wall for Niki for a while, but the collapse of the Lufthansa buy-out was the final nail.

Wanted - BARG DVD Vol. 2

I have only just found out that the entire run of BARG (British Aviation Research Group for the youngsters amongst us) magazines is being made available on DVD and, unfortunately, the first of them (Volume 2) sold out two weeks ago I have ordered the next (Vol. 3) and will get volumes 1 and 4 when t...

HABs in Luxor take 2.

Another selection of balloon shots from Luxor, Egypt - but this time from my second visit, taken in 2010. The first few are of the preparation and launch of the Lindstrand Balloon SU-289 which was my chariot of fire for this occasion followed by some air-to-air shots of others that departed at about...

Isn't the Airfix kit a Comet 4B - hence the lack of BOAC decals as BOAC never operated them?

Thanks Zigzag - I too am not a fan of close crops (unless for artistic effect) - side on, 2mm from nose and 2 mm from tail shots do nothing for me. Thanks Rich & Erik, I don't want to over-process these as, when I tried some noise reduction, I lost detail in the crops and sand. The colours are muted and misty because that is what it was like. Don't forget - these were taken between 05:30 and 06:30 just as the sun started to rise at ISO800 o...

HAB Air-to-Air

Someone earlier said that it was rare to see air-to-air shots of Hot Air Balloons, so I thought that I would share these with you from a trip to Luxor, Egypt in 2008. I do not know how many of these are still flying as the tourist industry in Luxor has been all but destroyed by the recent political ...

And good luck with getting a pair of engines for that - the first thing stripped from the Heralds when retired were the engines for re-use on F-27s.
