The only thing that I found that works (being in your shoes before) is modelstrip paint remover. It is about £4.99 and works very well!

Tamiya Extra thin is definitely the way to go. Tamiya Cement is pretty good but I found it very similar to Revell Contacta.

Now we have the 1/144 going how about the starter kit GB. This would be a GB for all abilities. Choose a cheap kit like the Airfix Spit and no airbrushes, filler, sanding etc allowed, just what comes in the box. I put a fire cracker/air bomb inside a 48 scale hellcat and lit the fuse. It made a Big Bang and never did find even half the plane after that!

I have the 300mm f/4 and a 1.4tc on my 5d3 and its superb. No image quality loss at all.
