Lancaster NX611 "Just Jane" Day/Night Run Photos

Post by Rob Leigh »

Saturday 6th November marked the annual night run of Lancaster NX611 at the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre at East Kirkby. The centre carries out taxy runs throughout the season but there's just one special night where you're able to experience the Lancaster at night, arguably its natural environment.

Any engine run by a four engined WW2 bomber is going to make an impact, the sounds, smell and visual spectacle is a delight to the senses. However, once the light drops and the sky begins to blacken, the Lancaster takes on an air of reverence that's somehow hidden during daylight hours. There's plenty of time between the day and night runs for you to wander around and absorb the feelings evoked by NX611 whilst thinking just what this bomber means. It's not just a machine, it's a memorial to those who left these shores many years ago gripped by fear and anticipation of the horrors they were about to face, all of them driven by a sense of duty that ultimately provided many of the freedoms we all enjoy today. During its short period of operations, East Kirkby saw nearly a thousand airmen depart its runways, never to return.

Watching a Lancaster run up at night is really only dipping a toe into the waters of experience that the inhabitants of East Kirby went through in wartime, but its as close as we're going to get and I challenge anyone to witness one of these events and walk away unmoved. I've often referred to these events as a quasi-religious experience, some people may think I'm being over-effusive or having a joke by using those words. Those who've shared the experience know I'm not.

The Panton family has done (and continues to do) a great deed in providing a focus for our understanding of and respect for the men of Bomber Command. I thank them for their vision, determination and respect.

I hope that this selection of photos does justice to Saturday night's event.

A great set of photos you have there, I was lucky enough to see Just Jane out on a taxi run a few months ago it was by pure chance that it was on the day I went there, seeing those night shots really bring her alive I would love to go back now and see that, it looks awesome and must sound great !!
thanks for posting these,
Rob
