A Very Special Day In Somerset-18th May 2019

Post by Arno 01 »

A two hour drive down to the South West today. Historic Helicopters was founded in 2013 by Mr Andrew Whitehouse, 32 Years ago this Wessex was retired, after many man hours and hard team work, UK CAA Permit to Fly was issued yesterday and this happened today. I worked on RN Wessex for my part 3 engineering training and became qualified to maintain and qualified to sign ( QM &QS) on 707 NAS at Yeovilton in 1983, so you can image how happy I and 100's of others were today. Many thanks to Mark and all the crew for a superb day.

Fabulous photographs Arno 01, many thanks for sharing! It was great to meet you and I hope that you enjoyed the Open Day.

The fourth member of the Wessex crew on Saturday was ex-RAF Winchman Bob Pountney, famous for his appearances in the 1990 Scottish Television Series "Rescue" (including the Piper Alpha Rescue) and "This is your life". He is now one of the Directors at the fantastic Morayvia Aviation Museum:

tankbuster81 - Unfortunately we are unable to attend RIAT 2019 with the Whirlwind and Wessex. I am sure that fellow Aviation Enthusiasts will be as disappointed as we are!

What a real shame. RIAT no longer feels quite like the enthusiast's event it once did.

On a positive note, what wonderful sharp captures of this exciting addition to the scene.
