(Updated) Dundee Spitfires 30/8/20 & 17/9/20

Post by Stonefaction »

Had heard that a pair of Spitfires (one of which was the silver round the world one) were to pop into Perth for fuel on their way to Inverness today. However, a change of plan meant a visit to Dundee instead - which meant I had a chance to see them from my window on approach (albeit a bit distantly). However, a little later than ideal I decided I should maybe try to see them a bit closer and set off on foot for the airport. Both calf muscles resented being exercised when I tried a spot of running, but I managed to get there in time to see them arrive and met up with a couple of pals to watch them depart again. Not the greatest photos but I don't get the opportunity too often these days for aviation photos.

Lovely shots Baz, thanks for sharing. Worth the aching calf muscles!

Ah, but how many folk have got pics of Spitfires with the Tay Bridge in the background.

Nice set of pics to remember an unexpected visit by a couple of Spitfires.

Epic navigation fail. Goodwood to Exeter, and they end up in Dundee!

Really like the river/bridge backdrop on some of these piccies. They called in to Leeds East Airport (former RAF Church Fenton in North Yorkshire) for fuel on the way up too.

Lucky enough to catch the "THANK U NHS" Spitfire PR.XI G-PRXI/PL983 over Ninewells Hospital in Dundee, taking my Spitfires in Dundee total to 3 in less than 3 weeks.

Wasn't it terrific. Couldn't have asked for better weather.

The one drawback at Ninewells was that it passed just to the south, so I was shooting into the sun almost as soon as it passed me. Other than that, yep, the weather probably couldn't have been any better.

Know what you mean. I thought it would circle wider than where we were to the north and that would have been fine, with sun right on it. But as he turned fairly tightly, he went right overhead and because we were up a hill, he was fairly close. Glad to have seen it and won't forget it in a hurry.

I was gutted when I took the phone call saying they were going to Dundee instead of Perth. Ah well you win some, you loose some.
Nice set of pictures Baz...and nice to see things with aluminium wings instead of feathers for a change!

Thanks, Wallace. Don't get much opportunity to photograph the aluminium winged ones these days (and even the feathered ones aren't getting that much coverage this year).
