I didn't know Virgin operated A340-600's out of Gatwick...what route(s) were they on?

Don't think so - they are still operating scheduled services....

Media launch flights perhaps? They both operated a flight from Detroit to LHR in late October / early November, the day after the visit to LGW...

After a bit more research i think they may have been on charters bringing the american footballers over for the games at wembley as virgin have that contract.
