RIAT 2022 Discussion Thread
Re: RIAT 2022 Discussion Thread
Serious clutch at straws, but a thought that went through my head was 'i'm wondering if they're saving the American update till the 4th July'. If memory serves me correct, they've done this previously.

Re: RIAT 2022 Discussion Thread
Very true, sometimes RIAT updates can feel like supporting West Ham at times
Re: RIAT 2022 Discussion Thread
Smaller at west, less facilities, but less busy too. Depends if you prefer to see the arriving aircraft in the air, or driving around.... (assuming they're using 027 runway). Background is much nicer at the western end if photography is your interest. I've been to both, I usually only go to the western end if the wind is 'iffy' for 27 arrivals personally....as not everything rolls/flys all the way down there so you may miss something you want to see (Norwegian special scheme F-16 didn't go down there in 2019 to some complaints as I recall). But having said all that, if they're using 09 runway I kind of think the Eastern end is a waste of time personally.
Re: RIAT 2022 Discussion Thread
For 27 arrivals - West is considered by some to be photographically superior with the nice backdrop, but it can be very very frustrating because a lot of the juicy items can turn off early, and you can get an hour or so of nothingness. For East, you get nice uncluttered approach shots, and are much closer to the runway, but the touchdown images have that cluttered backdrop. However there are more crowds at East.
For 09 arrivals - West is pretty rubbish. It’s much further from the runway, so heat haze puts paid to a lot of images, and a longer lens is needed. It also gets crowded by people flocking over from East. For East, stuff can turn off early, but it also turns off (for static) right in front of you, but in the afternoon that’s backlit if the sun’s out.
Each to their own. Most people seem to prefer East, but depends what you want out of it.
Basically 09 arrivals is pretty rubbish all round!

Re: RIAT 2022 Discussion Thread
This basically. I found 09 arrivals on the Tuesday of 2018 not too bad, as they'd moved the enclosure fence closer to the action....but then some of us got blown over by the Mirage 2000 on the Wednesday so I don't know if they moved it back again in 2019 as I was at East both arrivals days that year....

At West in 2018 the fence line was on the taxiway (close enough to have herc/E6b wing tips over our heads), whereas 2019 the fence line was way back on the grassBodz156 wrote: ↑Wed 01 Jun 2022, 11:10 am

The barriers at west in 2018 weren’t in the normal position (and it was worse off for most people, I think, as well as proximity issues). They put them back to normal in 2019.

As the Platinum Jubilee celebrations begin, we're pleased to be able to confirm more Royal Air Force aircraft for the static displays at RIAT 2022! We will be welcoming the new Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft to the show for the first time to join the extensive static displays, plus Hercules, Atlas & Typhoons. Weekend visitors will also be treated to a number of flypasts from the F-35B Lightning II.
Continuing our celebration of the Queen's Platinum Jubilee, we're delighted that the Royal New Zealand Air Force will be bringing their Boeing 757 to RIAT 2022. Visitors should be prepared to be amazed by the agility of this airliner when it performs in the flying display! Continuing the Platinum Jubilee theme, we're also expecting aircraft from the Royal Canadian Air Force to join our static displays, which will be added to the confirmed aircraft list in the coming weeks once final approvals are in place.
We can now confirm that the iconic U-2 Dragon lady is joining the USAF 75th Anniversary line-up, on static display for all three days of RIAT 2022. Secondly, we'll be welcoming the USAF's newest tanker, the KC-46, for static display for the first time at the Air Tattoo. We continue work with our friends across the United States Air Force to see how we can celebrate their 75th Anniversary in the air at RIAT 2022, with more news expected soon...
The Air Operations Department were over the moon to receive confirmation from Top Aces, who will be sending one of their legendary A-4 Skyhawks for static display! This participation is very appropriate as part of our 'Training the Next Generation Air Force' theme at RIAT 2022, which includes the use of Red-Air contractor aircraft to provide threat replication for modern aircrew training.
Finally this week, in a change to previously announced plans, the Royal Navy Wildcat will now be on static display at RIAT 2022, and not performing in the flying display programme.

Re: RIAT 2022 Discussion Thread
Wonder if the U-2 will be dragged across the field or will they make the effort to fly it in so we can have the odd piccie or so. Though I think I know the answer
Re: RIAT 2022 Discussion Thread
Yeah that's pretty decent!
Up to 181 aircraft now on my list assuming it's the same F-35 on all three days (+/- spares, visitors, etc.).

Nice! Always good to see the RNZAF 757, especially flying.
Some excellent RAF additions.

Outstanding update. Riat is always better when you arrive and all the larger aircraft are visible so having several large aircraft added to the static has made me very happy

Re: RIAT 2022 Discussion Thread
Ahh, I know for most people its a boring display or a toilet break but I wanted to see the wildcat display, it seems to be avoiding every airshow I am attending this year
Re: RIAT 2022 Discussion Thread
Just read the email from dbh with todays update, the riat eye is back i think i might be going on it this year, how long does it take to get round?
