AIRPOWER22 - Zeltweg, Austria

Post by PeterR »

This week the Austrian Air Force confirmed AIRPOWER22 will take place at Hinterstoisser Air Base in Zeltweg on Friday 2nd & Saturday 3rd September.

Whilst there's not a convenient list of participating aircraft on their website, from the Press Conference, the following items were announced:
  • Frecce Tricolori, Patrouille Suisse & Krila Oluje.
  • Flying Bulls, pretty much the whole fleet, plus special displays including Red Bull wingsuit jumpers flying alongside aircraft.
  • F-16, Gripen, T-346, L-39NG, PC-9M and PC-7.
  • Austrian Air Force... pretty much everything they have. Including a display from nine Alouette-III helicopters performing to a specially composed symphony, composed and arranged by Tristan Schulze and performed by 100 military musicians. I have heard through other sources that the show is being used as the main farewell event of the Alouette III as it retires from Austrian service imminently.

Think I also recall the Belgian A109 display from memory.

Like the ghost of the Dutch "Grasshoppers" making a last ride.
Can't remember seeing them at Greenham or Fairford (maybe blanked them out!) but they always seemed to be at Mildenhall and they seemed to have the longest display - I remember one of their moves was called the carousel.

Not much seemed to happen in their display to be honest – But strangely would love to see them again – perhaps to take me back to those early Mildenhalls!
Anyone else recall the Grasshoppers?

Different time then when the Dutch flew a number of display items

Grasshoppers
F 104 – (later F-16)
F-27
And Double Dutch 2 x F-5

Now the dutch have no displays....

Wonder if Zeltweg might suffer a little this year with less stuff from Eastern Europe.
Being close by it gets a fair share and often they are highlights

A new tranche of spotter packs is available from 20.00 today, I presume that is continental Europe time so compared with the UK that is one hour difference. 19.00 for Britain if my maths are right.

To increase your chances to get one (if you want) keep a copy of your passport in jpg or pdf and a photo of your face in jpg at the ready. Total not exceeding 20 MB. (personally I prefer to be in the normal showground, it gives that special Zeltweg backdrop and most of the spotterplaces were into the sun shooting last time)

I believe it's worth attending this show, simply for the wonderful location/backdrop

It certainly is. Free entry, sun behind you most of the day, RIAT standard flying display & scenery to die for. 👌

Has anyone done the show and got the train in?

Accommodation options in the local area look very limited so close to the show.

Also, is it a full show on the Friday and Sat and are both open to the public?

Cheers

Yes, both Friday and Saturday are full shows open to the public.

I did it once by train from the town of Leoben. It works well, so long as you accept not being at the front, I'd say, but perhaps others have a different experience? We left before the closing act on Saturday too for an easier return.

Did it on the train from Vienna in a day. 3 hours standing in the vestibule as lots of others had the same idea! Worked pretty well apart from that though….

Yeah, did it in 2016. Got the train to Zeltweg from Graz (via one change in 'Bruk und der Mur' I think). Found it really easy, got a front row spot on the Friday (slightly quieter day) & then used Saturday (very busy in the show) to walk the airfield & see statics & watch the show in a more relaxed way. Getting to Zeltweg is fine & easily walkable from the station, the only thing is getting away afterwards. It's busy & takes a while to get a train as lots of people are doing the same. Having said that it was well managed by the Austrian train services (extra trains/carriages) & police (crowd control).

Yep, perfectly achievable from there. This is the site I used when I went, to buy my train tickets online & print them off before even flying to Austria...

Just to remind: three years ago I did this one with 4aviation, and on our way to our hotel in Graz, we also visited a J35Ö in that city. Wasn't the most impressive W&R that day though, that was the czech MiG 23 on top of a house that itself was uphill somewhere.

Quality list there. Serbian Mi-17?! Nice. Wish I could afford to go again....
Airpower is the best military show around (alongside RIAT obvs), & the location is the best!

Go if you can manage it!

The list is a little haphazard so here it is with my arbitary categorisation - not sure if it helps much tbh! I can't see there being a German Typhoon or Dutch F-16 display for example so take that with a pinch of salt. For those who have not been before, then a lot of the Red Bull stuff displays in mixed formations/displays, e.g. a F4U, P-38 and Alpha Jet display. The last time I went there was an excellent helicopter role demo involving multiple Blackhawks, OH-58s and Alouettes which reminded me somewhat of the Yeovilton finale. The Su-22, Tiger (been on my want list for ages), Me 262, Draken and the Serbian contingent are top my highlights for now. Really looking foward to this one...
